Job Overview

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the installation, modification, design, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery used in the operation of Myers Industries production facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.

The Maintenance Technician II is the experienced/journey-level class in the series, fully competent to independently perform duties. This class is distinguished from the lower classification of Maintenance Technician I by the relative independence with which duties are performed. A Maintenance-Technician II may advance to the higher level after gaining experience, certification (as required) and demonstrating proficiency through written and oral examinations which meet the qualifications of the higher level.

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties involved in the inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair and servicing of shop equipment, components, facilities and machinery associated with the production, packaging, material handling, storage, and distribution of Myers Industries products, such as pipes, tubes, rods, seals, shafts, stuffing boxes, gears, motors, bearings, couplings, chemical and/or plastics production, chemical and resin storage and feed systems, flow stations, conveying systems, valves and pumps; tests and monitors equipment and machinery for vibration, bearing temperature and output capacity.
  • Repairs and maintains air compressor systems, water treatment, water cooling/chilling systems, mixers/grinders, and hydraulic systems.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, vacuum pumps, mechanical systems, conveyance systems and related equipment and apparatus used in the production, packaging, material handling, storage, and distribution of Myers products.
  • Maintains production facilities, equipment, and machinery by using manual, electronic and computer control systems.
  • Maintains and services air compressors; maintains, installs, pulls, services, and aligns all electric motors.
  • Operates shop and facility bridge cranes, boom trucks, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, steam cleaners, pneumatic, hydraulic and electric tools, shop machinery and related tools and equipment.
  • Operations mobile truck hydraulic (telescopic) cranes up to 17.5 tons; utilizes lifting/load handling devices (e.g., slings, cable, and spreader bars).
  • Installs, replaces, and repairs chemical and/or resin storage, feed and distribution system components such as storage tanks, generators, analyzers, evaporators, distribution lines and valves, and various chemical or material feed pumps.
  • Responds to leaks in chemical or material feed systems, hydraulic systems, cooling systems, pneumatic systems, and makes repairs to storage tanks and feeders; supplies emergency generators for power outages; supplies portable pump stations and fab piping.
  • Maintains, repairs, and services valves and surge tanks at reservoirs, pumping and flow stations; install and/or replace large water meters and backflows.
  • Ensures timely and accurate completion of preventative maintenance activities, utilizing computerized maintenance management programs; maintains detailed record keeping in support of computerized maintenance management system.
  • Requisitions necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Research new operational methods, techniques and equipment and recommends their application.
  • Plans and lays out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans and specifications for industrial and waterworks equipment and machinery; makes suggestions for system design and operational improvements.
  • Designs and fabricates a variety of brackets, supports and other metal structures using fabricating equipment, fabricate and install exhaust piping, mufflers, catalytic converters, heat exchangers and associated piping for industrial engines and generators.
  • Rebuilds existing equipment within the production facility.
  • Under close supervision, fabricates and installs piping for new pump installations which may include plumbing, pipe fitting and machine tool operations.
  • Responds to emergency situations as necessary, extended duties may include confined space entries utilizing departmental safety equipment, policies, and procedures.
  • Uses lock-out/tag-out procedures to block electrical and other energy sources and operations equipment at panel for maintenance purposes.
  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties involved in the inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair and servicing of production equipment, components, facilities and machinery.
  • Tests, troubleshoots, calibrates, and performs preventative maintenance on a variety of complex electronic instruments and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience: Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; two-years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The Maintenance Technician II is the experienced/journey-level class in the series, fully competent to independently perform duties. This class is distinguished from the lower classification of Maintenance Technician I by the relative independence with which duties are performed.
  • Knowledge of: Intermediate principles, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial/mechanical equipment and machinery common to large state-of-the-art repetitive production facilities; machine shop procedures and practices; safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the trade; application of lock-out/tag-out procedures; shop mathematics; pneumatics and hydraulic systems; use and operation of oxyacetylene and cutting torch materials; basic electrical safety, confined space entry procedures, basic first aid; cost estimating and basic techniques of engineering and drafting as they apply to assigned responsibilities; computer applications related to the work; codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the trade; mechanical maintenance, rigging and lifting operation and metals identification.
  • Skills: Demonstrate application of principles, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial/mechanical equipment and machinery common to large state-of-the-art repetitive production facilities; machine shop procedures and practices; safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the trade; application of lock-out/tag-out procedures; shop mathematics; pneumatics and hydraulic systems; use and operation of oxyacetylene and cutting torch materials; basic electrical safety, confined space entry procedures, basic first aid; cost estimating and basic techniques of engineering and drafting as they apply to assigned responsibilities; computer applications related to the work; codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the trade; mechanical maintenance, rigging and lifting operation and metals identification.
  • Ability: Under minimal supervision, diagnose and repair a variety of industrial/mechanical equipment, systems and machinery, such as valves, motors, pumps, drive and conveyance systems, and other equipment common to Myers Industries production facilities; use precision and diagnostic instruments to measure required tolerances of mechanical parts; identify and implement effective courses of action to complete assigned work; read and interpret plans, specifications, manuals and blueprints, use hand tools, pipe-threaders, taps, dies, measuring instruments and laser alignment equipment; exercise independent judgment within established guidelines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; coordinate work assignments with other facility departments; operate lift equipment in accordance with corporate safety policies. Follow and apply written and oral work instructions. Support, promote, and implement the company's and/or maintenance department's vision & mission, direction, and policies in a positive and professional manner and any changes to those items.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Mathematical Skills: While performing the duties of this class, the individual is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve problems; use shop mathematics (to include Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry); observe and interpret situations; deal with changing, intensive deadlines; and interact with officials and the public.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; and walk or sit. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move tools, materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
