THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT ON TASK ORDER AWARD.


The Polymer & Textiles Engineer will support the JETS II contract in Houston, Texas.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support various NASA programs by providing non-metallic and fibrous materials expertise for the selection of soft goods exposed to different atmospheres, high vacuum, and extreme temperatures. This support applies to any type of soft goods: semi-rigid plastics, films, textiles, nonwovens, and their finishing treatments.
  • Provide technical leadership on development of non-metallic material and fibrous materials (i.e. films, textiles, nonwovens) to use in Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) development for various NASA programs, this includes crew clothing, space suit materials, spacecraft interior hardware, parachute, inflatable structure, as well as hygiene and sanitation for lunar and Martian environments.
  • Act as primary reviewer and approver for NASA Material Usage Agreements (MUL) to ensure materials are compliant to be used in specific test conditions for testing performed in NASA thermal vacuum chambers.
  • Provide technical support related to non-metallic and fibrous materials for R&D activities under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) NASA programs.
  • Review NASA reports, requirement documents, proposals, conference papers, journal articles related to non-metallic and fibrous materials.
  • Support NASA Materials and Processes (M&P) engineers with respect to the evaluation and selection of non-metallic and fibrous materials.
  • Perform testing and characterization on non-metallic materials as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of 2+ years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Extensive knowledge on polymer structure-properties relationship.
  • Good understanding on different textile structures and their manufacturing methods.
  • Working knowledge with high performance polymers that are commonly in fiber, film, or foam, such as Aramids, Polyimide, PEEK, PBI, PTFE, PVDF, etc.
  • Solid understanding on different fiber properties.
  • Experience on polymer characterization methods, such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM/EDS.
  • Familiar with polymer testing standards.


DESIRED:

  • BS or higher education in Polymer Science and Engineering, Fiber Science, Material Science and Engineering, Textile Engineering, or related field; M.S. or PhD highly preferred.
  • Prefer 5+ years of direct experience with textiles and polymer characterization, fiber science.
  • Previous experience supporting a NASA program on structural textiles and soft goods development.
  • Experience with product development.

WORK LOCATION:

  • This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off.
  • This position may require some travel.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

All Bastion employees must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen; some contracts require participation in periodic random drug and alcohol screening programs.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.
  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time).
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
