Overview


We are seeking an Assistant Laboratory Technician (Student Intern) to support the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), Operational Infectious Diseases (OID) Directorate by assisting in by assisting in routine laboratory activities and providing support for ongoing research projects. This position offers a valuable opportunity for a university student currently enrolled in a biological sciences program to gain hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment focused on infectious diseases. The intern will assist senior laboratory staff and researchers in performing a variety of tasks, including sample processing, data collection, and maintaining laboratory equipment.


The OID Directorate conducts ongoing, laboratory-based surveillance of US military populations in unique environments to quantify and study the etiology of infectious illnesses. Test specimens are collected from ongoing surveillance programs and from special investigations of febrile illnesses and pneumonia among military personnel or civilians (recruits, forces afloat, deployed forces, outbreaks of concern, and border populations). In addition to the utilization of portable, rapid assay technologies to identify pathogens in the field, test specimens and limited epidemiologic data, when approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), are provided to the NHRC laboratory where diagnostics and, in some instances, in-depth pathogen characterization is conducted. Results are provided to sponsors, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, local investigators and collaborators, and, when applicable, county health units to guide proper responses that ultimately affect both the readiness of US forces and the safety of public health.

Responsibilities


Laboratory Support


  • Assists in routine laboratory procedures, including preparing samples, reagents, and solutions under the guidance of senior technicians or researchers.

  • Supports the setup, operation, and cleaning of laboratory equipment and workspaces.

  • Performs basic laboratory tasks such as pipetting, centrifugation, and proper storage of biological samples.



Data Collection and Entry


  • Helps collect, record, and organize experimental data accurately in laboratory notebooks and digital systems.

  • Assists in the input of data into databases and helps ensure the integrity of recorded data.

  • Conducts preliminary data analysis under the supervision of senior staff.



Equipment and Supply Management


  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining laboratory inventory, including restocking supplies and reagents as necessary.

  • Helps ensure proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.



Safety and Compliance


  • Follows all safety guidelines, including the handling and disposing of biological and hazardous materials.

  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment, adhering to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.

  • Participates in required safety and regulatory training, including biosafety and chemical safety protocols.



Research Assistance


  • Provides general support to ongoing research projects, including helping with literature reviews or preparing materials for research presentations.

  • Assists in maintaining accurate and complete records of research activities in compliance with laboratory protocols.




Qualifications


Required


  • Must be currently enrolled in a university or college program pursuing a degree in a biological sciences field (e.g., biology, microbiology, biochemistry).

  • Demonstrates basic understanding of laboratory techniques and principles gained through coursework or prior experience.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on various laboratory tasks.

  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.



Preferred


  • Previous internship or laboratory experience in an academic or research setting.

  • Interest in infectious diseases or microbiology.

  • Familiarity with laboratory safety guidelines and procedures.
