Join us in shaping a supportive and wellness-oriented campus environment as the Director of Counseling. In this pivotal role, you'll lead our mental health counseling and wellness services, guiding students towards a balanced and successful college experience. You would serve alongside a high performing and caring team in the Health and Wellness Services department that incorporates both medical and counseling student services. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a team dedicated to maximizing the quality of student care. This position is based on our scenic Alfred campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead with Impact: Oversee the delivery of exceptional mental health services, including individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention. Ensure adherence to best practices, laws, and ethical guidelines.
  • Inspire and Guide: Supervise and mentor a talented team of mental health counselors and a Coordinator of Wellness Education providing ongoing supervision, support, evaluation, and professional development.
  • Deliver Services: Offer individual and group counseling, perform crisis interventions, and consult or refer students to psychiatric and medical resources as needed.
  • Meet Emergency Needs: Coordinate and/or provide crisis intervention services to meet students' emergency needs during office hours and after hours as needed.
  • Ensure Support Across Campuses: Effectively deliver services across all campuses contributing to the success of Alfred, Northland, and Wellsville based students. Occasional travel to campuses to connect with key stakeholders, facilitate services, and verify appropriate protocols are in place.
  • Contribute to the Campus Community: Serve on key committees such as the Behavioral Intervention Team and the Student Affairs Leadership Team providing valuable input to enhance campus life and student success.
  • Expand Access: Act as the primary contact for our teletherapy provider, promoting and enhancing access to mental health services for students.
  • Promote Wellness: Drive campus-wide wellness education initiatives, supporting student health and overall success.
  • Provide Training: Create and lead training workshops for faculty, staff, and student leaders, enhancing their ability to support student well-being.
  • Collaborate for Success: Partner with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver services and share resources that benefit the entire college community.
  • Champion Inclusivity: Cultivate an inclusive environment that respects diverse backgrounds and fosters cultural competency among staff.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, clinical psychology, or a related field.
  • NYS licensure or eligibility for a limited permit in NYS.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a clinical or counseling role.
  • Proven supervisory and management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in counseling/clinical psychology, counseling, or equivalent
  • Experience in case management and advocating for client-centered services such as healthcare, psychiatric care, and addressing housing and food insecurity.
  • Extensive experience working with diverse populations and college-aged students.
  • Proven track record in planning and implementing health and wellness programming.
  • Familiarity with telehealth services and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Experience with electronic medical record systems.
