Position Summary:
Villanova Theatre seeks a stage manager for the 24-25 Season. This is a part-time, hourly position with varying work hours throughout the school year. Rehearsals are generally held in the evening and on weekends. The stage manager is responsible for teaching and instructing the art of stage management to undergraduate and graduate students who will serve as Assistant Stage Managers and Run Crew for each production. The stage manager must model professional stage management practices including set up and breakdown of rehearsal rooms, recording blocking and choreography notes, completing run crew paperwork, and distributing rehearsal and performance reports. This position will call cues during each performance and may run the light or sound board pending crew availability. In addition to rehearsals, the stage manager is expected to attend a weekly production meeting and in-person shop visits as required. The stage manager will teach students of all experience levels and must therefore have experience teaching and mentoring students of many backgrounds. In the event of a student stage manager for a production, this position will mentor and supervise the student stage manager throughout the production.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as Production Stage Manager for Villanova Theatre productions Attend and oversee auditions and callbacks for each production Create and update calendars including rehearsal calendars, conflict calendars, and ASM schedules/ASM calendar
Set up and breakdown rehearsal rooms for each rehearsal (sometimes in multiple spaces in a single day)
Keep blocking notes and choreography notes
Maintain paperwork including prop lists, costume run sheets, and ASM/Run Crew sheets for the running of production. Some of this work can be delegated to ASMs but must be overseen by the SM.
Write and distribute clear and detailed rehearsal and performance reports. Create and distribute daily calls and handle most communication with actors.
Call each production from the booth and oversee student run crew, ASMs, and board operators. If required, run the lightboard or sound board for a production.
Attend weekly production meetings and take detailed meeting minutes to distribute after the meeting. Make shop visits and attend other in-person meetings as required.
Train students to become Assistant Stage Managers
Delegate tasks to ASMs and supervise their successful completion (Prop tracking, furniture/scene change tracking, costume plots, line notes, etc.)
Meet with ASMs weekly outside of rehearsals to set goals for the production, answer questions, and evaluate performance.
Supervise additional crew members including run crew and board operators during technical rehearsals and during performances.
Create and maintain the ASM schedule as outlined in the Villanova Theatre stage management handbook.
Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
Associate’s degree
Work Experience
3-5 Years of professional experience as a stage manager
Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)
Strong attention to detail
Above-average written and verbal communication skills
Ability to handle multiple projects at one time
Ability to maintain deadlines
Demonstrated experience mentoring and teaching students with various experience levels
Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)
Strong understanding of industry standards when it comes to stage management
Previous experience running a light board or sound board (QLab) for a production
Preferred Qualifications:

5+ Years as a professional stage manager and stage management educator
