Job Description:

The University of Oklahoma (OU) invites applications for a Senior Applications Developer with a focus on defense/security related supply chain software engineering and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools. This position is instrumental in realizing our vision of establishing a Center of Excellence in Defense Supply Chain at OU-Norman campus. This position will work collaboratively with the Oklahoma Aerospace & Defense Innovation Institute (OADII) and the Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC), both integral parts of OU's commitment to cutting-edge research. The Senior Applications Developer will work with the principal investigator, DISC and OADII leadership teams, as well as affiliated OU faculty to architect and lead software solution development, identify and develop research and funding opportunities; assist with building programming teams, and establish collaborative relationships with federal, state, and corporate affiliates on strategic initiatives.


Job duties include:



  • Provides application support including system/batch monitoring and processing, handling user questions and queries, investigating and solving system problems, support with third party integrations, providing on-call services to support systems.

  • Performs business analysis to gather customer business requirements.

  • Works as a member of the technical team to apply software or system upgrades.

  • Performs unit and system testing when needed.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices, trends, and applications.

  • Conduct innovative software development and research enhanced by AI/ML with a strategic emphasis on defense-related supply chain risk management and predictive analytics.  

  • Architect the solution frameworks for new supply chain projects and lead software development teams to implement, test, and validate the solutions. 

  • Develop and implement advanced algorithms and models to address challenges in the defense sector

  • Establish and nurture partnerships with federal agencies and industry partners to enhance collaboration and research initiatives in supply chain resilience and security. 

  • Actively engage in networking activities to foster relationships with industry leaders and government agencies. 

  • Supervise students working on projects.

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education:  Bachelor's degree, AND: 



  • 48 months experience in application and software development and/or custom solutions.


Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 96 months related experience.


 Skills:




  • Knowledge of software design and programming principles

  • Knowledge of programming for diverse operating systems and platforms using development tools·       

  •  Ability to program in at least one programming language

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Strong initiative to solve problems


    Department Preferences:



    • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field

    • Experience working with DoD or other federal agencies.

    • Experience managing a team of developers.

    • 48 months of research specialty experience.

    • Experience with Python, JAVA, PHP, C/ C++, SQL, JavaScript or related tools.

    • Attention to detail and a demonstrated acumen for problem-solving skills and judgment.

    • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information.

    • Effectively communicate with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and outside stakeholders.
