Description

MELE Associates requires a Lead Fire Protection Engineer to join the exciting nuclear security mission of the Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) as subject matter expert. NNSA’s Office of Design and Construction (NA-92) under the Office of Infrastructure (NA-90) has responsibility for providing design and construction oversight of our large and complex nuclear and non-nuclear capital line-item projects. The candidate’s primary focus will be providing design and construction expertise and oversight in the area of fire protection for these capital line-item projects. The crucial role involves reviewing fire protection design to ensure all fire protection strategies are compliant with appropriate federal regulations as well as DOE/NNSA specific regulations and are effectively integrated into overall facility safety and construction activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Review fire protection system design for new and existing NNSA facilities, including fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure the integration of fire safety and nuclear safety measures into overall design.
  • Conduct risk analyses and safety evaluations and propose engineering solutions to mitigate identified risks.
  • Participate in project reviews as a fire projection subject matter expert
  • Evaluate fire protection strategies and plans, ensuring they meet the latest safety standards and operational needs.
  • Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders to ensure fire protection design meets the requirements.
  • Serve as a technical expert in fire protection, providing guidance and training to other engineers and project team members.
  • Apply lessons learned to guide design of fire protection systems on future projects across the complex
  • All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Fire protection system design experience for nuclear or high hazard chemical facilities
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in fire protection engineering, including significant experience in design and implementation of systems in critical facilities
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Fire Protection Engineering
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA codes and standards, and other relevant federal, state, and local fire safety regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex engineering projects and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong technical, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Willingness to travel as required for project needs and site visits; travel less than 25%
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with Fire Protection system design under ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) quality program
  • Experience working for a Management and Operating (M&O) contractor at DOE / NNSA sites

LOCATION: This is a full-time onsite position in Washington, DC 20024, USA

  • Telework options are available with a requirement to be in the office at least three days a week, based on the level of in-person meetings and office needs.

SALARY: Salaries are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate’s related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
