Formulation Principal Scientist - Mars Pet

The Formulation Principal Scientist role will collaborate within Regulatory and Nutrition Compliance and Cross-Functional teams to build and continuously improve the foundational nutritional data used to develop and maintain Mars Pet products across the Dry, Wet and Care & Treat technologies.

This role will apply scientific inquiry and rigor to update and maintain equations used to calculate nutrients from proximate analyses and maintain the accuracy of nutrient predictions. Through application of scientific methods and data analysis this role will develop insights to raw material and finished goods enhancements for nutritional compliance and improved product performance.

What are we looking for?

• Master's degree or higher in Animal Science, Food Science, Food Chemistry, Biology, Chemistry or related technical field (Preferred PhD)
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in a related role or field.

• 10 years of experience in R&D in food/pet manufacturing or related industry.

• Demonstrated Expertise in scientific principles (chemical, microbiological, physical) associated with food systems, food preparation, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and ingredient and ingredient/process interactions; HACCP working knowledge.
• Expertise in the use of analytical models and systems.
• Demonstrated excellence in math and computer skills

• Demonstrated excellence in documentation practices.

• Experience in SAP, BOM recipe documentation and understanding of recipe design software preferred

What will be your key responsibilities?


  • Lead research and application of knowledge and insights to improve and uphold the accuracy of nutritional data used for formulation.

  • Validate and maintain the accuracy used to predict nutrients from proximate analyses.

  • Lead the Sentinel program and use of insights to improve product compliance and performance.

  • Partner with Formulation, Nutrition, Product Development and Central Teams to use data and analytics to troubleshoot nutrient outages and corrective action and drive continuous improvement.

  • Establish models and targets to improve the accuracy of formulation nutrient predictions.
