Job Description

The Science Center Machinist manages the Science Center Machine Shop and associated Engineering Studio and plays a critical role in supporting teaching and research within the Science Center. The Machinist works closely with faculty and research students to troubleshoot, design and fabricate parts, pieces, and equipment needed in research and teaching. In this role, the Machinist must be able to convert ideas proposed by end users to design (Science Center users do not typically bring detailed plans of projects), and must be able to elicit from end users the key criteria needed to ensure the production of safe, workable products. The machinist supports students working on projects in engineering and physics classes to provide guidance as they design and fabricate their projects. The Machinist also works closely with the Science Center Instrument Specialists to maintain existing scientific instrumentation in good working order.



Primary Position Responsibilities:


  • Manage the Science Center Machine Shop and associated Engineering Shop. Maintain a clean shop and maintain shop equipment in good working order.

  • In consultation with faculty and staff (and students authorized by faculty), design, develop and fabricate materials for use in teaching and research.

  • Assist in maintenance of scientific instrumentation throughout the Science Center by working with Science Center Instrument Specialists to troubleshoot mechanical problems and repair instruments, potentially fabricating necessary parts.

  • Provide instruction to faculty, staff and student users of machine tool, metal, wood and plastics work and operations, with focus on safe operation and practice. Develop operations and safe-use training materials for all equipment in shops. Evaluate users' safe operations of machining equipment and maintain an up-to-date list of authorized shop users.

  • Train and supervise student employees working in shops.

  • Maintain work-flow management spreadsheet detailing jobs in progress, jobs completed and jobs waiting, including estimated time to completion and date completed. Manage credit card charges for supplies and budget charge-back system to users in a timely manner (at least monthly verification required). Order supplies as needed for jobs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of experience of setup and operation of both CNC and manual milling machines and metal-cutting lathes. Candidate should demonstrate a strong knowledge of part fixturing, machine setup, CNC programming and shop safety.

  • Strong knowledge of metalworking techniques including sheet-metal part design and layout.

  • Experienced in operation of woodworking machinery, woodworking tools, and fabrication methods.

  • MIG, TIG and Gas welding skills are highly desirable.

  • Minimum of three years CAD experience - software used on campus includes OnShape, Autodesk Fusion, MasterCam, and SolidWorks.

  • Previous teaching experience either in an industrial or academic setting is highly desirable.

  • Excellent communication skills required, as is a demonstrated passion for working in a liberal arts environment where we partner with our students in their educational attainment.

  • Associates degree or higher preferred.


Skills and Abilities:

  • In consultation with faculty and staff, design, develop and fabricate materials for use in research and teaching. Assist faculty/staff and students in the design process, helping them bring their ideas to life by assisting with the design development and fabrication processes.

  • Manage machine and engineering shops and support laboratories.

  • Select, order, install and maintain equipment in both shops and laboratories, including CNC mills, lathe, band saws, drill presses, miter saw, panel saw, sheet metal equipment, laser cutter (Trotec Speedy 300), 3D printers (currently Ultimaker S7 and Markforged Onyx Pro.

  • Troubleshoot and triage instrument operation as needed.

  • Maintain up-to-date job log showing job status and expected completion date.

  • Train and supervise student employees working in shops

  • Maintain shop inventory and manage shop budget, including charge-back records

  • Coordinate support and safe use of the engineering shop with Director of Engineering Studies.

  • Ensure safe-use for all instruments in shops

  • Develop operations and safe-use training materials for all instruments in shops. o Maintain and manage a list of appropriately certified users for all equipment.

  • Maintain and oversee student and faculty use of equipment in the machine and engineering shops, including those listed above.

  • Instruct students in use of machine tools, metal-, wood- and plastics-work and in operations and fabrication to students, with focus on safe operation and best practices. Evaluate students' safe operation of machining equipment.

Position Schedule:

  • This is a part-time, benefits-eligible role, working 24 hours per week. The typical schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., although some flexibility may be possible.
