Description: Industry leading food manufacturer in the Fort Atkinson, WI area is seeking an EHS Manager to lead and champion all safety and environmental initiatives within their dynamic food manufacturing facility. This role is critical in developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive EHS programs with a primary focus on ensuring a safe working environment for all employees, preventing injuries, and maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations (OSHA, EPA, FDA considerations where applicable). The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader passionate about fostering a proactive safety culture and driving continuous improvement in EHS performance, specifically tailored to the unique challenges of food production.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Program Leadership & Management:
Develop, implement, manage, and continuously improve site-specific safety policies, procedures, and programs (e.g., Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Machine Guarding, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Forklift Safety, Electrical Safety).
Lead the site Safety Committee, fostering employee engagement and participation in safety initiatives.
Conduct thorough incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence.
Perform regular safety audits, inspections, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) / Risk Assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance; prioritize and track mitigation efforts.
Develop, track, and report key safety performance indicators (KPIs) such as Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR), near misses, and audit findings; analyze trends and drive improvement strategies.
Ensure rigorous compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations (OSHA). Stay current with regulatory changes and update programs accordingly.
Oversee contractor safety management programs.
Environmental Compliance:
Manage environmental programs related to air emissions, wastewater discharge, storm water management (SWPPP), spill prevention (SPCC), and waste management (hazardous and non-hazardous).
Ensure compliance with EPA regulations and manage required permits and reporting (e.g., Tier II, TRI).
Promote waste reduction and sustainability initiatives.
Health & Industrial Hygiene:
Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, air quality) as needed.
Oversee programs such as Hearing Conservation and Respiratory Protection.
Implement ergonomic assessments and solutions to reduce musculoskeletal risks, particularly relevant to food processing and packaging lines.
Training & Culture Development:
Develop and deliver engaging EHS training programs for new hires and existing employees, ensuring comprehension and compliance. Maintain training records.
Act as a visible safety champion on the plant floor, actively promoting and reinforcing safe work practices and behaviors.
Drive initiatives to enhance the overall safety culture, moving beyond compliance to employee ownership of safety.
Food Safety Coordination:
Work closely with the Quality Assurance (QA) department to ensure EHS policies (e.g., chemical handling, sanitation safety) align with and support food safety standards (GMPs, HACCP).
Ensure safety protocols consider food safety requirements (e.g., safe use of cleaning chemicals, LOTO procedures during sanitation).
Administration & Reporting:
Maintain accurate and organized EHS records, permits, and documentation.
Prepare and submit required regulatory reports.
Manage the EHS budget, if applicable.
Liaise with regulatory agencies during inspections and inquiries.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a closely related field.
Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs (LOTO, Machine Guarding, etc.) with a proven track record of reducing workplace incidents.
In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance requirements. Working knowledge of EPA regulations.
Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis, risk assessments, and safety audits.
Strong leadership, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and training skills.
Ability to influence and engage employees at all levels to build a strong safety culture.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of 1 a team.
