CUMULUS MEDIA | Albuquerque, NM is Hiring a News Director - and We're Not Looking for Average.




KKOB is New Mexico's powerhouse news/talk station, on air since 1923 and trusted by listeners across the state. Now, we're looking for a News Director who's ready to lead our newsroom into its next era.


This isn't a babysitting gig. It's a chance to take the wheel of a fully staffed newsroom and shape the stories that matter in a state that never runs short on headlines. We want a local-first leader who knows how to craft compelling, fast-paced newscasts that command attention-on-air and online.


The ideal candidate knows how to break news, own a developing story, and inject personality into every segment. If you understand the power of sound, story, and urgency-and have the guts to lead from the front-we want to talk.



Key Responsibilities & Qualifications




What You'll Do:

• Own the daily editorial process and guide story selection with a strong news sense

• Coordinate breaking news coverage with speed, clarity, and authority

• Drive our social media presence (Facebook, Twitter/X, web) with smart, engaging content

• Get out of the building-report from the field, develop sources, and stay close to the pulse of the city

• Lead a newsroom that's already stacked with talent-we just need a captain

• Deliver on-air when needed, and support hosts with news you can use

• Oversee long-range planning and special coverage that gives KKOB the edge

• Provide consistent coaching and performance feedback to your team

• Be present at

  • A newsroom leader with 5+ years of experience in medium-to-major markets
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Passionate about journalism and hungry to break stories-not just echo them
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Excellent on-air delivery and editorial judgment
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Social-savvy and digitally sharp-you know how to make a post pop
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Organized, self-motivated, and calm under pressure (even when the sky is figuratively or literally falling)
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Comfortable with weird hours, real deadlines, and high expectations
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  • Valid driver's license required-news happens everywhere
