JOB HIGHLIGHTS

The Sr. Field Representative is part of the Northeast Region team of The Conservation Fund and initiates, funds and completes conservation land transactions in Maine. This position works with the VP & Northeast Representative to develop and implement the strategic vision for the Maine program. Projects may include, but are not limited to, ecologically sensitive areas, working forests, coastal lands, Tribal land return, recreation and open space areas, working waterfronts, and mitigation lands. The Sr. Field Representative is expected to develop and maintain their own book of business and be self-sustaining under the program. Work includes but is not limited to: building relationships with public agencies, land trusts and other partners, real estate project coordination, site visits, landowner contacts, negotiations, preparation of legal documents and coordination of due diligence activities, and public and private fundraising. The Sr. Field Representative works in coordination with the Legal, Conservation Acquisition, Government Relations, Finance, Strategic Giving, Marketing and Communications, Working Forest teams and coordinates with other Northeast state programs.

  • Coordinate conservation activities statewide with the VP & Northeast Representative and other teams.
  • Identify, pursue and execute land conservation real estate projects including negotiations, funding, and partner outreach.
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies for projects and operations.
  • Develop effective relationships and coordinate with federal, state and local conservation agencies, local units of government and other partners (including foundations, public funding entities, legislators, land trusts and other non-profits, communities, landowners and individuals).
  • Work with the VP & Northeast Representative to develop, and in many cases, lead efforts to garner political support to further the strategic direction of the Maine program.
  • Work with VP & Northeast Representative to identify and develop compensatory mitigation projects that complement partner conservation initiatives.
  • Work with the VP & Northeast Representatives to coordinate conservation activities statewide and assist with, and in most cases, lead the various components of real estate transactions, including internal approval documentation, as needed.
  • Provide support and/or leadership in land conservation, outreach, fundraising and other matters.
  • Perform project due diligence including coordinating appraisals, surveys and environmental audits, site evaluations, and coordination of same with legal team.
  • Track and complete grant and other funder and partner requirements.
  • Maintain accurate database of landowner and partner contact information and project tracking and grant reporting.
  • Manage contractors.


WHAT WE NEED YOU TO HAVE

  • 10+ years of experience in land conservation real estate; proficiency in all aspects of conservation real estate including fee simple, conservation easements, partial interests, oil/gas reservations, minerals, timber, gift lands, and conservation buyers.
  • Negotiating skills and transactional real estate experience. Solid understanding of how land trust partners operate.
  • 10+ years of experience and proven background in project and operations fundraising including a demonstrated ability to lead and successfully complete major project fundraising efforts. 
  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, partners, elected officials, board members, employees, or equivalent.
  • Ability to master the real estate transactional and land exchange requirements of the State and the requirements of all grant management processes
  • Experience interacting with landowners and agencies.
  • Solid understanding of natural resource and land use issues in the region.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork within an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public presentations.
  • Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of individuals and organizations with diverse backgrounds.
  • Computer skills including MS Office applications, E-mail, PowerPoint and spreadsheets. 
  • Attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Orienteering/navigation skills on land and water.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of The Conservation Fund. 


WHAT WE’D LIKE YOU TO HAVE

  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as planning, real estate, political science, environmental sciences, biology, natural resources management, forestry, and/or natural resource economics or paralegal certificate.
  • Experience working with State & Local Governments.
  • Experience using GIS - ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap/ESRI GIS applications.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Some lifting and carrying will be necessary – up to 30 pounds.
  • Work is performed in both an office setting and in outdoor settings in all weather conditions. 
  • When visiting conservation sites, the ability to traverse all terrain in outdoor/all weather conditions including on water will be necessary.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to carry out duties, often with short notice and in inclement weather over long distances in remote areas.
  • Estimated travel – 30% per month, with additional day travel required. 

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $110,000 and the position is eligible for opportunities to earn performance-based bonus compensation. Please note: Salary range provided is an estimate and will be evaluated on an individual basis, taking into consideration the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education. The final salary offer will be determined accordingly.
