We are currently looking for a Fixation Quality Engineer to join our team in one of our plant locations: Birmingham, AL, Decatur, IL, Pueblo, CO, Cheyenne, WY or Spokane, WA.

This position requires occasional travel between Birmingham, AL, Decatur, IL, Pueblo, CO, Cheyenne, WY and Spokane, WA.

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION  

The Fixation Quality Engineer will support the Quality Department and support 5 locations to ensure the quality and performance of railway fastening and concrete crosstie systems before they go into standardized production. This role focuses on creating and establishing standardized processes and procedures for voestalpine Nortrak’s rail fastening and concrete crosstie product lines.

 

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

SAFETY:  

  • Comply with and enforces all Nortrak safety policies and regulations.
  • Set an example for all plant employees by performing all quality functions in a safe manner and encourages safety as a staff member of the plant floor.

 

QUALITY:  

  • Develop and manage process control data within MS systems to improve quality and effectively lower CoPQ rates. 
  • Perform internal process audits to verify MS effectiveness. 
  • Establish and/or optimize product/process continual improvement systems, metrics and reporting for plant. This could include defect (PPM) reporting, Quality documentation, corrective action tracking, manufacturing yields and capabilities reporting. 
  • Act as a core member of development teams utilizing the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) product development model and all associated tools and methods. Including generation and control of Process Flow Diagrams, Process/Design FMEAs, Control Plans, Work Instructions, DOE and SPC analysis. 
  • Perform appropriate inspections, to ensure that product realization processes meet all applicable specifications and standards including product homologation (external and internal). 
  • Review process control techniques to ensure measuring and recording techniques employed are accurate and that monitoring protocols are adequate to effectively control processes and facilitate troubleshooting.

 

ON-TIME DELIVERY:  

  • Perform duties as required to ensure that customer delivery commitments can be met and files quality records in a timely manner.
  • Assist with customer complaints, to ensure customer satisfaction.

 

COST:  

  • Ensure compliance of actual product realization with the planned product realization process.
  • Establish metrics and data analysis to identify and trend costs concerns.

 

PEOPLE:  

  • Act as a resource to management and plant employees by promoting quality product and helping to train employees to avoid production of non-conforming product.
  • Assist with monitoring EMS performance utilizing Internal and Layered audits and Management Reviews.
  • Promote continual improvement of Environmental Management System (EMS).

Other Duties as Assigned.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL:  

  • Adhere to Nortrak's Environmental Procedures, Practices and Policies.  

 

QUALITIFCATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar engineering.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • 5-8 years of experience in manufacturing and Quality Engineering.
  • Experience writing standard operating procedures.
  • Experience working with multiple departments including new product development/R&D, manufacturing, process engineering and operations.
  • Strong knowledge of QA/QC processes and inspection tools.
  • Software experience including MS Office, SAP, CAD.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Excellent documentation, analytical, and communication skills
  • Occasional travel between Birmingham, AL, Decatur, IL, Pueblo, CO, Cheyenne, WY, Spokane, WA.

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • 5-8 years of experience in Fixation Quality Engineering
  • Experience with track geometry, sleeper-to-rail interface, and vibration/dynamic load behavior.
  • Familiarity with various rail fastening systems (elastic clips, screw spikes, Pandrol, Nabla, etc.).
  • Experience with ductile, vulcanization, rail anchors, plastics and concrete.
  • Good understanding of ISO 9001 quality standards and railway safety protocols.
  • Preferred experience in lean six sigma and PPAP.

 

PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or climbing.
  • Must be able to lift or handle up to 25 pounds at times. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasional travel may be required which includes walking, standing, sitting and driving from short to long periods of time.
