WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Executive Director is a dynamic leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of the National Kidney Foundation’s operations within Ohio. This role carries significant responsibility and is critical to advancing the mission of NKF. While the workload is demanding, the impact of this position is unparalleled in shaping the future of kidney disease care and patient advocacy.

As the Executive Director, you will lead local efforts to raise funds, engage community leaders, build partnerships, and ensure that NKF’s programmatic goals are achieved. You will work closely with the Regional Vice President (RVP) to drive the execution of strategic objectives, achieve financial targets, and collaborate across departments to ensure success. Your leadership will inspire the team to achieve excellence and innovation in all aspects of the organization’s work within the region.

This position demands an individual with a proven track record in fundraising, volunteer management, and strategic execution. You will play a pivotal role in steering the NKF’s efforts to engage and mobilize the diverse Ohio community, building strong partnerships with local stakeholders and ensuring the sustainability of the foundation's mission.

Fundraising Leadership

  • Responsible for a gross revenue target in excess of $1.5M.
  • Lead a donor-centric culture, fostering relationships and driving a comprehensive, year-round fundraising program to meet both financial and programmatic goals.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with corporate sponsors, individual donors, and foundations to expand engagement and revenue streams across multiple fundraising channels.
  • Manage a portfolio of existing and new donors, ensuring high-touch stewardship and engagement.
  • Partner with the team to recruit volunteers and corporate partners while ensuring strong event and program participation.
  • Adapt and pivot fundraising strategies, including virtual events and donor outreach, to ensure the achievement of targets.
  • Oversee the team responsible for Individual Giving, Special Events, and Programs.
  • Work collaboratively with national team on the cultivation and stewardship of all major gifts prospects and corporate relationships in an effort to maximize fund development for all of NKF.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or equivalent database for donor management, reporting, and analytics.

Board Development

  • Lead the recruitment, engagement, and retention of 3 local Board of Advisors and 3 Medical Advisory Boards.  Ensure 100% board giving, robust committee structure and active individual board member participation.
  • Work closely with RVP and board chairs to develop a board strategy in support of local goals.  Lead local team and board chairs on the execution of that strategy to support growth.

Fiscal Oversight

  • Develop and implement the region’s operational plan, including budgeting, financial analysis, corporate development, and program needs, in close collaboration with staff, volunteers, and the RVP.
  • Ensure sound fiscal management, including budget adherence, ROI targets, and timely processing of financial records in accordance with NKF’s procedures.

Program Execution

  • Support the local implementation of NKF programs, both in-person and virtual, including professional, patient, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with national team on the cultivation and stewardship of all relationships that support program execution in a manner that maximize impact for all of NKF.
  • Cultivate partnerships with health systems, medical professionals, and community organizations to drive collaborative programmatic support.

Market Planning and Strategy

  • Formulate and execute a comprehensive market plan to drive financial success and program growth.
  • Identify, cultivate, and recruit volunteers, corporate partners, and organizations to participate in NKF initiatives.
  • Develop and activate engagement strategies, special events, and communications plans to elevate NKF’s presence and mission in Ohio.
  • Create detailed timelines and activity calendars for all programs and events.

Public Relations and Advocacy

  • Lead advocacy efforts, including engaging with legislators on state-level legislation related to kidney care.
  • Coordinate quarterly meetings with the Ohio statewide advocacy group and execute a Policy Roundtable event at the Ohio Statehouse.
  • Serve as the public face of NKF in media relations, public speaking engagements, and policy awareness efforts.
  • Advocate for kidney disease awareness and initiatives at local, state, and national levels.

Managerial Leadership

  • Supervise a local team of six staff members, providing training, guidance, and performance coaching.
  • Manage the recruitment, training, and professional development of staff to support NKF’s operational goals.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Handle corrective action in accordance with NKF policies, ensuring a productive and positive work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the organization’s goals and mission.
  • Support an environment of collaboration and partnership between national and local teams.

WHAT YOU’LL POSSESS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 8 years of fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within voluntary healthcare or related fields.
  • Proven success in securing major grants, gifts, and corporate sponsorships.
  • Experience in designing and executing virtual programs and special events.
  • Strong track record of engaging and managing volunteers and board members, as well as leading and mentoring staff.
  • Expertise in planning, budgeting, and forecasting, with a keen focus on volunteer and donor engagement.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and managerial skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software and database management systems.

Must have unimpeachable integrity and trustworthiness while possessing a high degree of tact, discretion, and professionalism. Verbal and written communication skills will be used daily. Maintain effectiveness under pressure. Competency in use of a multiple-line telephone, computer, photocopier, and other standard office equipment.  Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. Flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed. Available for overnight business travel. Must have a valid driver’s license.
