We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to architect, build, and optimize our complex IoT infrastructure, focusing primarily on Node.js development in an embedded environment such as a raspberry pi while collaborating with our distributed team to design solutions that are scalable and secure. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise and problem-solving abilities to contribute throughout the product development lifecycle—from discovery and customer interviews to implementation—playing an essential role in advancing our technology stack through continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining comprehensive documentation and balancing hands-on development with strategic technical leadership.
Responsibilities
Inherit & Improve: Take ownership of existing embedded systems within smart laundry equipment, focusing on improvement, troubleshooting, and optimization.
Gateway Optimization: Maintain and enhance gateway systems related to device networking (Shadow setup, UniFi), utilizing Wireshark for in-depth analysis.
Process Innovator: Drive improvements in CI/CD workflows (CircleCI), Docker usage, and automation through scripting, transforming ideas into streamlined solutions.
IoT Fleet Management Expertise: Collaborate with other engineers on fleet management interactions, leveraging existing knowledge to solve issues and explore enhancements.
IoT System Champion: Become deeply familiar with on-site sensors (operation, hardware, communication) to support testing, production checkups, and potential new feature development.
Cross-team Support: Aid diverse teams with tasks like backend API work and interacting with third-party auditors.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
Embedded Experience: 3+ years as an embedded software engineer, ideally with exposure to Linux-based systems.
Networking Proficiency: Understanding of networking protocols (MQTT, TCP/IP, etc.) and debugging tools like Wireshark.
CI/CD & Automation: Experience with CI/CD pipelines (CircleCI a plus), Docker concepts, and the ability to automate with scripting (Python, Bash, etc.).
Self-Motivated & Collaborative: Demonstrated ability to take initiative on inherited projects while working effectively within cross-functional teams.
Highly Preferred:
Familiarity with the Balena deployment platform
Familiarity with AWS IoT
Experience with sensors and IoT-related communication protocols
A keen interest in identifying and implementing optimizations
Travel:
Ability to travel domestically as needed, no more than 10% of the time
