Description
The Department of Public Safety at Governors State University is looking to hire a Police Telecommunicator (TC) - Dispatcher to receive, process, clarify, interpret, prioritize, and accurately disseminate information to ensure officer safety, save the lives of endangered persons, reducing property losses, reducing the effects of injury, apprehending criminals, and rendering timely assistance to the public. The Telecommunicator provides a vital communication link between the citizens who need help and the various emergency services that can provide the necessary assistance.
50% Promptly answer incoming calls from the public on emergency lines, including 911 and Honeywell alarm systems, and gather necessary information about the situation. Determine the severity and nature of the emergency, including the type of crime, potential threats, and incident location. Based on established protocols, relay relevant details to the appropriate Department of Public Safety (DPS) members. Maintains routine radio traffic and computer communication with all DPS members, Governors State University (GovState) community, and the public.
10% Maintains daily log of radio transmissions and various activities. Maintain radio contact with DPS members on the scene, providing updates and instructions as needed. Document call details, including caller information, incident type, dispatch actions, and officer responses in appropriate logs. Makes emergency notifications at the direction of supervisory personnel and by procedure.
10% Monitoring of special equipment CC1V monitors, security cameras, etc. Maintains knowledge and skills for use of continually evolving equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, 911 equipment, recording devices, telephones, radios, and other equipment.
10% Monitoring of GovState security equipment and fire alarm system and notify appropriate persons as required. Operates and monitors the control center of a computerized fire/security alarm system and dispatches police officers as necessary.
5% Maintain Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS). Operates terminal connected to state or local LEADS and/or a departmental computer to enter or retrieve information to gather, verify, or maintain data; interprets responses of the data systems. Recognizes malfunctions of the terminal and assists system personnel in correcting problems.
5% Maintains files of daily activities and court files. Maintains knowledge of current communication policies, procedures, and state and local dispatch standards.
5% Assists in providing basic emergency medical care when required. Offer basic first aid instructions or crisis intervention when necessary, depending on training and local protocols.
5% Performs other related duties as assigned.
*High school graduation or equivalent.
*No record of a felony conviction or a crime involving moral turpitude.
Preferred Qualifications
*Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS) certification.
*Knowledge of CADS and Records management systems.
*A working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, and local laws, including the Campus Security Act of 1997.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:Illinois residency is required within 180 days of the hire date.ASSESSMENT EXAM DETAILS:This vacancy requires an in-person paper exam and an Audio Media exam and must be completed on campus.
