The Refrigeration Technician at Holy Cross Health is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing refrigeration systems, ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and HVAC systems throughout the facility. This role ensures the smooth operation of critical refrigeration equipment that supports the healthcare environment, including the safe storage of medicines, food, and other perishable items, as well as providing comfort to patients, staff, and visitors.


Key Responsibilities:


Maintenance & Repairs: Perform routine and emergency maintenance on refrigeration units, ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and HVAC systems. Ensure all systems are operating efficiently and in compliance with health and safety standards.


Installation: Install new refrigeration equipment, including ice machines, refrigerators, and freezers, ensuring proper setup and alignment according to manufacturer specifications and local codes.


Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Quickly identify and resolve mechanical or electrical issues with refrigeration systems, ice machines, freezers, and refrigerators to minimize downtime and maintain continuous operation.


Preventive Maintenance: Conduct regular preventive maintenance checks on refrigeration units, freezers, refrigerators, and ice machines to avoid system failures, including cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting other critical components.


Temperature Control & Monitoring: Ensure that refrigeration units and ice machines are operating within proper temperature ranges, especially in areas storing medications, vaccines, or sensitive materials, and take corrective action when necessary.


Record Keeping: Maintain detailed logs of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections for each refrigeration system, ice machine, and freezer to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and hospital protocols.


Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety guidelines and environmental regulations, particularly when handling refrigerants, and ensure systems are functioning in an energy-efficient manner.


Collaboration: Work alongside other maintenance staff and hospital departments to coordinate repairs and minimize disruption to hospital operations. Provide support for special requests or urgent issues as needed.


On-Call Support: Be available for on-call emergencies to address unexpected failures of refrigeration systems, ice machines, refrigerators, or freezers, including during nights, weekends, and holidays.


Skills & Qualifications:


Knowledge & Experience: Expertise in refrigeration systems, including ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and HVAC systems, with the ability to troubleshoot, repair, and perform regular maintenance on these systems.


Certifications: EPA Certification (Section 608) for handling refrigerants is required. Additional HVAC certifications are a plus.


Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong diagnostic skills and the ability to quickly identify and resolve mechanical or electrical issues in refrigeration systems.


Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor and maintain the proper functioning of critical systems, especially in environments that require strict temperature control (e.g., medical storage areas).


Physical Stamina: Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including lifting heavy equipment and working in confined spaces.


Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with other team members and hospital staff.

  • Position Summary:



    Holy Cross Health is seeking a skilled and reliable Refrigeration Technician to join our Facilities Management team. The Refrigeration Technician will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing refrigeration systems, including ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, and HVAC systems in our healthcare facilities. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the optimal functioning of refrigeration systems, supporting the smooth operation of the facility, and ensuring a safe, comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors.



    Key Responsibilities:




    • Installation & Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair refrigeration systems, ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, cooling, and HVAC systems in compliance with local codes, safety standards, and hospital requirements.


    • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues with refrigeration equipment, ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, and HVAC systems, ensuring quick resolution of problems to minimize disruptions in facility operations.


    • Preventive Maintenance: Perform regular preventive maintenance checks on refrigeration systems, ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, and HVAC systems to ensure efficiency and extend equipment lifespan.


    • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections, ensuring compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.


    • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including handling refrigerants and other materials in compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations.


    • Collaboration: Work closely with other facilities staff and departments to coordinate repairs and improvements with minimal disruption to hospital operations.


    • On-Call Support: Provide on-call emergency repair services for refrigeration systems, ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, and HVAC systems as required, including after-hours and weekends.


    • Training & Development: Participate in training programs to stay current with new technologies and best practices in refrigeration and HVAC systems.


    Qualifications:




    • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited refrigeration or HVAC program is preferred.


    • Experience: Experience as a refrigeration technician or HVAC technician, preferably in a healthcare or commercial setting.


    • Certifications:

      • EPA Certification (Section 608) for refrigerants

      • Valid driver's license

      • Additional HVAC certifications are a plus.




    • Knowledge: Strong understanding of refrigeration systems, including ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, HVAC systems, and related equipment, including troubleshooting, repairs, and system diagnostics.


    • Skills:

      • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals

      • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills

      • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment

      • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in physically demanding conditions

      • Familiarity with safety protocols and standards.




    Working Conditions:



    • Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and working in tight spaces.

    • Must be available for on-call shifts and be flexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

    • May require exposure to varying temperature conditions and hazardous materials, including refrigerants.

    • This position requires working in a hospital environment, which may involve exposure to medical equipment and systems.
