Position Overview


The City and Regional Planning program at The Ohio State University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to a research project focused on testing the transit-induced displacement hypothesis and investigating the connections between transit infrastructure investments, urban mobility, residential mobility, and displacement. This project aims to explore how transit projects can reshape communities and influence residential relocation patterns in the U.S.


The selected candidate will work with large, complex spatial datasets, including privately produced longitudinal Consumer Reference Datasets (CRDs) and spatial data on mass transit infrastructure projects inaugurated over the past two decades to investigate how transit influence home relocation patterns across the country. The scholar will work closely with Professor Manuel Santana Palacios and other team members in research activities and dissemination efforts, including writing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and presenting findings at academic conferences.



Required Qualifications



  • Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning or a closely related field.

  • Proficiency in R (or Python or Stata), including experience with data management, spatial analysis, geocomputation.

  • Experience working with large, complex datasets, including Consumer Reference Datasets (CRDs) and spatial data on mass transit infrastructure projects.

  • Strong analytical and statistical skills, including knowledge about causal inference methods.

  • Excellent written communication skills with demonstrated publication record and active participation in academic conferences.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working with Consumer Reference Datasets (CRDs), such as Data Axle's consumer database.

  • Experience with transportation or housing-related research, including familiarity with transit-induced displacement literature.

  • Familiarity with spatial econometrics and discrete choice modeling.

  • Experience with grant writing.



Responsibilities



  • Conduct statistical analyses and modeling to test the transit-induced displacement hypothesis, examining the connections between transit infrastructure investments, residential mobility, and displacement.

  • Manage and analyze large spatial datasets, including CRDs and transit infrastructure data, to investigate how transit projects influence residential relocation patterns and community reshaping.

  • Lead the writing of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and contribute to conference presentations.

  • Collaborate closely with Professor Santana Palacios and project team members to develop and disseminate research findings.

  • Engage with academic communities and contribute to the broader field of mass transit research and housing relocation patterns.
