The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist position. The incumbent carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University's research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University's reputation as a leader in the field.



CORE JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.


  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.


  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.


  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.


  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.


  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.


  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).


  • Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.


  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.


  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required

Department Specific Functions



The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics is seeking an assistant scientist to study the genetics and genomics of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (AD/RD). This position is specifically focused on statistical, computational, and bioinformatic analyses to identify and describe genomic factors influencing AD/RD. The scientist will accomplish this through the application of high-performance computing (HPC) environments and state-of-the-art computational techniques to high-throughput genomic data. This is not a functional genomics or "wet lab" position.


The scientist will be expected to: Perform statistical, computational, and bioinformatics analysis of Alzheimer disease genetic data Perform basic analyses of next-generation sequencing data including quality control filtering and bioinformatics interpretation Navigate and utilize HPC environments and practice responsible data management, documentation, and provenance. Conduct research in human disease models to evaluate candidate genes for above mentioned disorder Publish original research articles in conjunction with the principal investigator Present research results to principal investigators and collaborators Confer with principal investigators to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular experiment as required Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques. Seek independent funding from foundations and associations for pilot studies with the appropriate permission from leadership Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
