Job Summary

Carpenters perform core roles in construction and maintenance activities including selective structural repairs, floor covering, interior systems. Construction and maintenance repairs must be completed in accordance to building code and facilities standards with the least amount of disruption to the building occupancy.



Duties & Responsibilities


  • Construction and installation of windows, doors, concrete formwork, scaffolding, partition walls, suspended ceiling systems, LVT and modular carpet floor covering, interior systems, modular furniture, shingles, and other duties particular to the trade of carpentry at the University of Illinois.
  • Maintenance and repairs on suspended ceilings, shingles, modular furniture, manual projection screens, classroom seating, tablet armchairs, interior systems, and other duties particular to the trade of carpentry at the University of Illinois.
  • Installation of shelving, chalk and display boards, plaques, clocks, fire extinguishers, pictures, and all other types of wall hangings particular to the trade of carpentry at the University of Illinois.
  • Drive and operate service vehicles used for carpentry maintenance, installations, or repairs.
  • Cleans up job site upon completion of projects.
  • Responsible for proper use and care of carpenter equipment and tools.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.


Additional Physical Demands

Work Environment:
1. May work in confined spaces, at heights and depths and on slopes.
2. May be exposed to chemicals, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.
3. Receives daily oral instructions from Sub-Foreman, Foreman, as well as Assistant Superintendent of Building Maintenance. Work is reviewed by Sub-Foreman, or Foreman after each project is completed and occasionally during progress of project.
4. Works from blueprints or floor plans on larger projects. Consults with Foreman, Sub-Foreman or Assistant Superintendent of Building Maintenance for instructions on smaller projects. Uses own initiative and expertise as to the most practical way to execute a particular installation or repair.
5. The employee is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services.

This position may be assigned to a special shift from 10:00 P.M. to 5:30 A.M. to ensure projects may be completed with minimal disruption to building occupants.

Complexity:
Some jobs are simple, such as repairing a screen or patching floor tile. Some jobs require a lot of skill and knowledge, such as laying out a new suspended ceiling in a large irregularly shaped room or setting a door jamb and trimming it with 3 member casing to match our Georgian type of architecture. Also, carpenters must work with other crafts during remodeling, especially so they can accomplish their work.

Carpenters must be considerate of all individuals within the department including laboratory technicians and students doing research or studying when working in the buildings. Therefore, carpenters come in contact with many people from the President to the students.



Minimum Qualifications


1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Successful completion of a recognized carpenter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journeyman-level Carpenter experience (the trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by carpenters, millworkers, floor layers, and any other classifications encompassed within the scope of work included in these trade categories).

3. As required by the position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery, and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.

4. Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications


Experience with overhead door systems and installation. Interior systems.
Scaffold erector qualification.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 1. Journeyman level skills in carpentry work.

  • 2. Ability to understand oral and written instructions; often accompanied by blueprints with dimensions.

  • 3. Skill in operating and maintaining carpentry tools and equipment.

  • 4. Basic math skills.

  • 5. Ability to communicate and sufficient knowledge of trade to assist and train apprentices.

  • 6. Working knowledge of safety procedures.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0683 - Carpenter position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/12/2025. Starting salary is $40.10/hour.
