Midnight Sun is seeking a Module Supervisor in Durham, North Carolina, in support of a contract providing mission-critical services to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
The Animal Husbandry Support Contract for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences provides care, maintenance, and technical services for laboratory animals, seven (7) days per week, including weekends and holidays, for 72,447 square feet of laboratory animal facility space, which includes outside ancillary support areas, including a separate facility located approximately one mile from the main facility.
Midnight Sun supports the care and maintenance of the animals, the sanitation of equipment, technical training, and the general maintenance of the facilities in such a manner as to maintain the highest level of Accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC).
The Module Supervisor I will supervise the Animal Husbandry Technicians and Breeding Technicians to ensure all SOP's are being followed in accordance with the contract/government policies and procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Supervise all animal technicians in module.
Schedule technicians to animal rooms and ensure that all work is covered on a daily basis and in accordance with the appropriate SOP.
Coordinate weekly team module meetings.
Assist in the training of new personnel.
Attend animal dosing meetings as needed and maintain a current working knowledge of all ongoing studies in the module.
Ensure that technicians are knowledgeable regarding studies and hazards associated with those studies and that proper safety precautions are taken.
Serve as the liaison to Veterinary Medicine Services and Quality Assurance Laboratory (QAL).
Collect and deliver sentinel animals per QAL schedule.
Maintain knowledge of special water or any other special care due to procedures and communicate any special instructions to technicians.
Prepare and distribute special waters to the animal rooms as needed.
Review weekend information and edit appropriately to cover the needs of the module.
Ensure that safety protocols are present and review with technicians as applicable.
Maintain open communication with Colony Management Supervisor/Breeding Specialist/Breeding Technicians concerning transgenic rooms as applicable.
Submit schedules and cubicle updates to Project Manager monthly or as needed.
Report any physical plant issues to the appropriate parties.
Monitor animal room notebooks daily to ensure that all SOPs are being followed, and that records are correct and complete.
Participate in quarterly walkthroughs of module conducted by Deputy Chief, Project Officer and Project Manager.
Provide coverage for routine husbandry duties as needed.
Check empty rooms for pest control daily.
Order sentinels as needed and maintain records of sentinels location in the module, order cage cards for sentinels as they are received.
Deliver hazardous waste to appropriate bins for disposal and generate and submit forms for the pickup of waste to Health and Safety.
Complete and forward animal inventory for module monthly.
Create and revise room signs as needed.
Collect and review animal room notebook sheets monthly and submit them to Project Officer.
Coordinate with investigators and VMS any movement of animals to surgery, procedure rooms or other animal rooms.
Coordinate with AIMS certified technician the tattooing of animals as needed.
Collect fecal samples from animals as needed to monitor animal health.
Attend and participate in the monthly Animal Health Meetings and scheduled supervisors' meeting.
Participate in the Supervisor's weekend on call rotation.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
At least two (2) years of experience in an animal facility.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well with subordinates and supervisors and to promote teamwork.
Knowledge of industry-specific regulations and equipment.
Working knowledge of eSirius or a comparable electronic facility management system.
High proficiency in Microsoft Office Skills (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Certifications, Licenses, and Other
Certification as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) required.
Certification as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATg) from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or Certified Manager Animal Resources (CMAR) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.
Essential personnel must have flexibility in scheduling, with the ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and/or on-call for coverage or other emergency situations.
Must be able to obtain/maintain site access.
Work Environment
Performance of the required job duties will be in large research facility where employees are subject to adverse variables of environmental conditions, both inside and outside. Work areas are often hot, humid, and noisy due to operation of cage washing machines and autoclaves.
Employees are potentially exposed to minor injuries such as cuts, bites, scrapes, pulled muscles, burns and unpleasant odors, and the possibility of exposure to hazardous materials including radioisotopes. Employees are exposed to animals and animal urine, feces, and dander that can act as allergens or as potential sources of zoonotic disease.
Animal care personnel are required to wear a washable, cotton/polyester two-piece uniform of scrub pants and a long sleeve, snap-front shirt (a one-piece cotton coverall may be substituted), safety shoes, disposable shoe cover, head cover, surgical mask), and gloves when working in the animal rooms. Protective clothing is required to be worn by ALL personnel entering an animal room from the return corridors.
Physical Demands
The essential duties and nature of this position require constant lifting, pushing, and pulling of carts and dollies, which may exceed 50 pounds.
Essential duties of this position require continuous walking, standing, sitting, and considerable arm and hand movements and may include movement at or above the shoulders/head.

Ability to climb stepladders, stairs, and walk on surfaces that may be uneven.
