Overview

The Princeton University Art Museum welcomes applications for the position of Museum Store Sales Associate.

 

The successful store associate plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall museum experience for visitors by readily engaging, imparting hospitality, displaying strong selling skills, product knowledge, and focusing on exceptional store operations. Superior customer service is expected of every store associate, with a focus on teamwork and possessing an individual zest for task completion.

 

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible term position.

With a collecting history that extends back to 1755, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the leading university art museums in the country, with collections that have grown to include more than 117,000 works of art ranging from ancient to contemporary art and spanning the globe. Committed to advancing Princeton’s teaching and research missions, the Art Museum also serves as a gateway to the University for visitors worldwide. As the Museum prepares for a dramatically reconceived new building scheduled to open in Fall 2025, the Art Museum presents three exhibitions in its downtown venue Art@Bainbridge. When the new building opens, the Art Museum will open with 32 galleries and initiate its new exhibitions program with seven annual exhibitions onsite and on tour.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist customers in a friendly and knowledgeable manner.
  • Provide information about merchandise, exhibitions, and the Museum to enhance the visitor experience.
  • Process transactions accurately and efficiently using the point-of-sale system.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized and visually appealing sales floor.
  • Replenish the merchandise and ensure that displays are well-stocked.
  • Collaborate with the Store leadership to create engaging product displays.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the merchandise, the stories they tell, and the Museum to assist customers with product selection.
  • Stay informed about new arrivals, artist collaborations, and relevant promotions.
  • Work collaboratively with other Store Sales Associates and Museum staff members to ensure a seamless and positive visitor experience.
  • Promote the Museum’s programs, lectures, special events, as well as museum collections.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.


Qualifications

Essential Requirements 

  • Previous retail sales experience, including cash handling and POS operations required.
  • Ability to learn and communicate key product information, especially specifics of handcrafted artisan pieces.
  • Comfortable in a rapid-paced environment.
  • Experience in Windows-based computer registers is required.
  • Experience with operating a POS (point of sale) register system is necessary.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lb. cartons of books or merchandise routinely.
  • Skill with store display and merchandising is preferred but not required.
  • Will be trained in all Store-related systems, as well as security and emergency preparedness procedures.

Preferred Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, Art History, or a related field.
  • Experience with inventory management software.
  • Creative and innovative mindset with a keen eye for detail and design.
  • Passion for art, culture, and museum work.
  • Experience in product design, product development, merchandising, or a related role, preferably in a museum or cultural institution.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
