The High-Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) team is at the forefront of radiated and conducted energy delivery systems from prime power to applications. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to grow, lead, and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-term programs and new programs supporting the DoD, DoE, and their contractors. The Power Devices and Modules section is looking for an exceptionally talented, motivated, and creative Semiconductor Packaging Technician to support rapid Research & Development (R&D) or Manufacturing activities in Colorado Springs, CO.
Specialty Focus Area: Development of Power Semiconductor Modules including, but not limited to, process development, fabrication, and testing. The primary job function is working with engineers and technicians in the hands-on manufacturing of advanced semiconductor switch modules. The process makes use of specialized equipment such as die attach machines, vacuum ovens, and wire bonding machines. Additional responsibilities include the encapsulation and chemical treatment of substrates and other materials.
Core Responsibilities:
Work closely with engineers and technicians to manufacture power semiconductor modules
Translate engineering design requirements into process parameters
Setup and operate specialized manufacturing and test equipment (die attach, wire bonding, vacuum oven, high voltage/current curve tracer, and high power pulser test beds)
Perform quality analysis and control of components
Secondary Responsibilities:
Assist with resistor and capacitor manufacture and test as needed
Support field tests for any department in the HPEM division
Support prototyping and testing of other Pulsed Power and Directed Energy projects as needed
Support laboratory upkeep and maintenance as needed
Other tasking on an as-needed basis
Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience working and assembling high power electronic components and systems (e.g. PCB board assembly, general soldering, ESD handling of sensitive electronics and materials, etc.)
Ability to interpret and create engineering schematics and drawings
Must be detail oriented and willing to learn new specialty skillsets
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to perform multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality
Ability to organize and prioritize workload efficiently
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff
Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
Willingness to travel up to 20% of the year
US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance
May require moderate physical effort, involving standing, sitting and use of hands while performing duties, carrying or lifting up to 40 pounds
Working environment is indoor, moderately quiet, reasonably clean, well-lighted and ventilated, moderate physical hazards may exist
Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years’ experience working and assembling high power electronics components and systems (e.g. PCB board assembly, general soldering, ESD handling of sensitive electronics and materials, etc.)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Some experience operating die attach and/or wire bonding equipment
Electronics Soldering and Assembly Certifications (e.g. IPC J-STD-001, IPC-7711/IPC-7721, etc.)
Experience working with laboratory equipment (e.g. vacuum ovens, laboratory chemicals, microscopes, precision scales and measurement devices, etc.)
Experience working with epoxy and/or other electrically insulating encapsulants
Experience constructing/maintaining/operating high-voltage, high-current electrical test beds
Active DoD security clearance
Able to perform all responsibilities listed above in an autonomous fashion with minimal supervision from engineering staff

Pay Range
Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $18 to $35 (hourly USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees.
