General Summary



Under general supervision of the Respiratory Care Director and Managers, attends to all education needs within Respiratory Care Services. Assists in the daily work activities of an assigned group of Respiratory Care Practitioners performing respiratory therapy techniques and procedures.



Principal Responsibilities and Tasks



The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.



Provides educational support for the Respiratory Care Services staff.



  • Responsible for new hire orientation, scheduling of clinical orientation and follow up of new hire employees.

  • Prepares the Annual Competency Marathon schedule. Prepares lecture and hands on education opportunities. Coordinates leadership and staff support.

  • Verifies that all orientation, ACE, CEU and any other paperwork is consistently maintained and on file.

  • Coordinates a regular education schedule for staff support. Maintain MDDC Society CEU program.



  • Attends college affiliate advisory board meetings.

  • Regular contribution to scholarly works review, abstract presentation, preparation and publication is expected

  • Supports interdisciplinary education needs.


Supervises the daily work activities of Respiratory Care Practitioners and students in accordance with departmental and UMMC personnel policies and procedures.




  • Candidates must present with a positive and enthusiastic passion for educating others. A recognition that everyone learns differently is essential. Educators are looked at as mentors and should be approachable individuals with an embracing personality.

  • Serves as a resource on advanced respiratory therapy and practice to Respiratory Care Practitioners and students. Offers proactive guidance and direction to respiratory staff regarding complex assessments and treatment procedures.

  • Coordinates and assigns patient-care duties and provides instruction and direction to Respiratory Care Practitioners. An ability to explain staffing and assignment decisions is an essential supervisory role.

  • Evaluates the clinical performance of assigned Respiratory Care Practitioners, provides feedback for employee performance reviews and handles disciplinary issues. Recommends promotions, reassignments or other status changes to the Respiratory Care Director and Managers, as appropriate.

  • Determines staffing needs and schedules assigned staff accordingly. Interviews and hires new staff members in collaboration with the Director and Managers.


Performs complex respiratory therapy procedures as needed, such as, oxygen administration, humidity therapy, airway management, resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, postural drainage procedures, respiratory monitoring, intermittent positive pressure breathing and pharmacology in accordance with generally accepted respiratory care practices.



  • Recognizes patient cardio-pulmonary difficulties such as, carbon dioxide retention, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, atelectasis, emphysema, metabolic alkalosis, and notifies the responsible physician.

  • Performs arterial punctures and interpretation of blood gas results for appropriate treatment of the patient.


Suggests quality assurance topics, reviews and evaluates Respiratory Care techniques, and suggests alternative methods that may improve the delivery of respiratory services. Reviews and instructs Respiratory Care Practitioners in advanced therapeutic techniques, utilization of therapy equipment and quality assurance in accordance with The Joint Commission standards and departmental procedures.



  • Reviews respiratory care documentation per patient, such as, patient charges, documentation of respiratory therapeutics and shift reports in accordance with the minimal requirements of The Joint Commission, assuring that requirements are met, timely and accurately.

  • Assists with the compilation of therapeutic utilization statistics, patient care volume statistics, equipment usage and other required data, for monthly utilization review.

  • identifies, evaluates, and recommends solutions or actions for resolution of problems.

  • Collaborates with Respiratory Care Director and Managers in communicating, updating and developing new departmental policies and in developing unit specific procedures.



  • Advises the Respiratory Care Director and Managers of pertinent changes that may affect operations, such as staffing patterns, special patient requirements, physician requests, equipment utilization and availability.




Ensures that the care, maintenance and storage of department equipment and supplies are in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols.



  • Calibrates and assures proper functioning of equipment. Reports equipment malfunctions to the Respiratory Care Director, Managers and/or appropriate biomedical staff.

  • Evaluates the need of additional clinical equipment and offers recommendations concerning the acquisition of new respiratory equipment.



  • Attends meetings and in-services that are unit specific for area of supervision i.e., trauma, surgical, medical, and NICU/PICU. Reports pertinent information, data, and discussion topics to staff, Respiratory Care Director and Managers

  • Candidates should be equally willing to support all patient care populations and be committed to learning new skills to accomplish this expectation.

  • On-going collaboration with Respiratory Care Director, Managers, Nurse Managers, and Physicians, especially in area of responsibility.

Qualifications

Education and Experience



  • Associate's Degree is required. Bachelor's of Science is preferred. Registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Respiratory Therapist is required.

  • Licensure as a Respiratory Care practitioner by the Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance is required. CPR certification is required. ACLS and or PALS certification is required. One NBRC advanced credential is required (ACCS, NPS or RPFT). Incumbents would be required to attain an advanced credential within 9 months of accepting the position.

  • Three years progressively responsible professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist, or equivalent, is required. Experience in a supervisory role is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Demonstrated competence in all adult, pediatric, and neonatal clinical areas is preferred.

  • Proficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system is required. Relevant knowledge of biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology is required. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, operation and use of standard respiratory equipment and supplies, such as, various types of ventilators, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, mist tents, oxyhoods and other oxygen delivery devices.

  • Proficient knowledge of respiratory diseases and standard treatments in order to assist in training employees. Knowledge of respiratory procedures (auscultation, administration of bronchodilators), respiratory surgical procedures, x-ray and arterial blood gas interpretations and lab result analysis.


  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work with respiratory staff, patients, and various hospital supervisory and clinical staff, as well as outside agencies.

  • Ability to supervise, monitor daily work activities, evaluate, train and motivate performance of subordinate technical, professional and clerical support staff.

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
