JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Care Delivery and Outcomes - Determine the services necessary to meet the needs of Cincinnati Children's patients and ensure that services and consultation are regularly and conveniently available to meet these needs. Propose, research and manage the development, implementation and assessment of long- and short-term goals and objectives. Build/maintain world class divisional and interdisciplinary programs. Oversee the quality of professional services provided by individuals with clinical privileges. Participate in the self-governance of the medical staff's activities and governing body. Build research programs in each surgical division in collaboration with Research Foundation leadership. Monitor patients' outcomes and the costs of services in order to evaluate, modify, continue or discontinue procedures used in the collection and analysis of data which determines and monitors care, treatment, rehabilitation provided, the actions and interventions taken and outcome of care provided to Cincinnati Children's patients.
Care Integration - Integrate the Surgical Services divisions' services into Cincinnati Children's primary functions; coordinate and integrate interdepartmental and intradepartmental services. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information while providing the exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information. Manage surgical practice plan. Serve on the Medical Executive Committee.
Staffing and Employee Development - Recommend a sufficient number of qualified and competent faculty members to provide care. Direct the control and distribution of present and future FTE's. Manage the selection, development, motivation, appraisal and discipline of faculty members. Ensure that job requirements and goals for each position are clear to employees. Ensure that orientation and in-service training and continuing education are provided to division personnel. Determine, ensure and document that personnel have adequate, specific training and orientation and regularly demonstrate satisfactory levels of competence. Determine and monitor implementation of continuing education goals of the department. Provide and coordinate education for personnel, patients or families through structured presentations and unstructured interactions. Promote professional input to in-service training programs, both for technical and non-technical staff. Act as chief education officer for Surgical training programs. Determine and document the qualifications and competence of department personnel. Assess, develop, implement and maintain appropriate departmental policies, procedures, job descriptions and philosophy as consistent with Cincinnati Children's policies and values. Develop and inform medical staff of new procedures and applications.
Quality - Continuously assess and improve the performance of care and services provided. Direct quality assessment and improvement functions; design and implement programs which evaluate the efficacy of treatment. Maintain quality control programs; ensure that quality control checks are conducted, and records are maintained on each procedure. Define and review performance criteria for quality control, proficiency testing and reporting of test results. Assure that corrective action is taken and documented on all unaccepted control and proficiency testing results.
Policies and Procedures - Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services: provide current written policies addressing surgical procedures, patient and family rights, and billing/charges. Assess, develop, implement and maintain appropriate departmental policies, procedures, job descriptions and philosophy as consistent with Cincinnati Children's policies and values. Monitor methods to assure compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies. Manage attendance at required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Enforce compliance with Infection Control policies and procedures.
Space and Resources - Recommend space and other resources needed by the department. Prepare, coordinate, evaluate and manage annual fiscal operating and capital equipment budgets for the Surgical Services division. Conduct fiscal analysis and monitor fiscal utilization of scope of services.
Financial Systems - Review data and systems which capture charges in order to maximize reimbursement for services rendered; monitor compendium for accuracy and appropriateness of charges. Research and develop opportunities for revenue development; obtain funding from outside sources. Conduct financial and quantitative analysis and monitor existing or proposed programs and services. Participate in the selection of resources for necessary services not provided by Cincinnati Children's. Approve and recommend business plans.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) required or equivalent
10+ years of management and medical practice experience within a complex, tertiary care medical center
