Job Overview:
As a Carrier Sales Director, you will be a key leader responsible for driving operational excellence, fostering talent development, and overseeing carrier sales operations. Your leadership will be integral in shaping the success of the Carrier Sales team by executing process improvements, aligning teams to meet performance objectives, and strategically managing relationships within the carrier network. You will work closely with leadership to identify growth opportunities, optimize operational efficiency, and ensure customer satisfaction through effective transportation management.
Key Responsibilities:
Carrier Operations Strategy: Develop and execute strategies to optimize the performance of our carrier network. Implement best practices in carrier management to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of goods while maintaining high service levels.
Carrier Relationship Management: Establish and maintain strong relationships with key carriers and logistics partners. Negotiate contracts, resolve disputes, and ensure mutually beneficial agreements. Collaborate with carriers to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and meet customer demands.
Operational Efficiency: Drive improvements in carrier operations to optimize routing, scheduling, and dispatching. Implement technologies and systems to streamline operations, and improve carrier performance.
Compliance and Safety: Ensure all carrier operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations. Implement and maintain safety protocols, monitor carrier performance, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations, safety standards, and environmental policies.
Cost Management: Develop strategies to reduce operating costs through efficient carrier utilization, negotiation, and route optimization. Monitor budgets and identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining high service levels.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for carrier operations, including on-time performance, carrier compliance, and cost-efficiency. Provide regular reports to the executive team on carrier operations status and recommend improvements.
Cross-Department Collaboration: Collaborate with Sales, Customer Service, and Logistics teams to ensure seamless transportation operations. Provide input into customer requirements and help design operational solutions to meet service expectations.
Technology Integration: Leverage advanced technologies to monitor, track, and improve carrier performance. Explore new technologies to enhance operational efficiency and visibility.
Training and Development: Lead training and development efforts for the carrier operations team, ensuring staff are well-equipped to meet industry standards. Foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Crisis Management: Manage unexpected disruptions in the carrier network, such as delays, accidents, or adverse weather. Implement contingency plans to minimize impact on customer delivery schedules.
Market Expertise & Operations:
Monitor market trends, analyze capacity demand and carrier performance to guide team decisions on carrier selection, negotiation strategies, and pricing.
Lead efforts to refine operational processes and leverage technology, including TMS platforms, to improve performance and ensure the highest service levels.
Travel:
Occasional travel to provide team support and attend leadership meetings.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Sales, Business, Supply Chain Management, Operations, or related field (preferred).
Experience: 10 years in the freight industry or brokerage, with at least 5 years in a people management role demonstrating a strong track record of success.
Leadership Skills: Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a diverse team of carrier sales teams. Experience in building and leading high-performing teams.
Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation ability with carriers and suppliers to ensure favorable terms, pricing, and service delivery. Skilled in dispute resolution and effective partnership management.
Industry Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of transportation regulations, logistics best practices, and supply chain management. Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends in the logistics sector.
Financial Acumen: Strong budget management skills, with the ability to track and manage carrier-related costs while maintaining efficiency and profitability.
Technology Proficiency: Expertise in fleet management systems, TMS platforms, and logistics tools, including GPS tracking, telematics, and route optimization software.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of clearly communicating expectations, policies, and strategies to internal teams, carriers, and partners.
