The Telecommunicator I maintains communications via radio with on-duty police officers and security guards and monitors security and safety systems at the university. The Telecommunicator I answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, provides assistance with walking in clients, and monitors safety and security systems.
Duties
Answers emergency and non-emergency phone calls and coordinates the response of law enforcement officers
Monitors various security and safety systems to ensure a safe environment for all who visit the campus
Communicates with officers as they patrol the campus as necessary
Uses a range of computer systems, entering, updating, and recovering data as necessary
Adheres to and communicates changing safety policies as necessary
Serves as a point of contact after hours and on weekends for all university-related inquiries
Attends to faculty, staff, and students who visit the walk-up window

Knowledge of the principles of working as a Telecommunicator in a higher education environment

Work Location and Physical Demands
Primary Work Location:
Works in an office environment that operates 8 to 12-hour shifts on a 24/7/365 basis
Physical Demands:
Work is normally performed in a typical, comfortable interior work environment which does not subject the employee to unpleasant elements
Individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing, etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks
Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
Must be available to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as needed
Qualifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Required Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of related job experience
License/Certification:
Must possess a Basic Telecommunications Proficiency Certificate issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or satisfactorily complete an accredited telecommunicator training program within one year of hire
Preferred Qualifications
TCOLE licensed/TLETS certified
