Job Description:

Position: Controller



Salary: 150,000-180,000




Key Responsibilities:



Financial Management & Reporting:

• Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and grants management.


• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.


• Manage the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors to ensure compliance.


• Ensure timely and accurate tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and state regulatory filings.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

• Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with leadership.


• Provide financial forecasting and cash flow management to ensure sustainability.


• Track and report on financial performance against budget, providing variance analysis and recommendations.

Grant & Fund Accounting:

• Ensure compliance with grant and funder requirements, tracking restricted and unrestricted funds appropriately.


• Oversee grant reporting and expense allocations, ensuring proper documentation.


• Collaborate with program staff to manage grant budgets and financial reporting deadlines.

Internal Controls & Compliance:

• Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.


• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit financial regulations.


• Develop and enforce financial policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and accountability.

Team Leadership & Collaboration:

• Supervise accounting staff and provide guidance on financial best practices.


• Work closely with department heads to provide financial insights for strategic decision-making.


• Present financial reports and updates to the board of directors and finance committee.

Qualifications & Requirements:



Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).


• Minimum of 5-7 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.


• Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit financial management.


• Experience with grant accounting and reporting.

Skills & Competencies:

• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud Financial Edge, NetSuite).


• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.


• Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
