Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and grants management.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
Manage the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors to ensure compliance.
Ensure timely and accurate tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and state regulatory filings.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with leadership.
Provide financial forecasting and cash flow management to ensure sustainability.
Track and report on financial performance against budget, providing variance analysis and recommendations.
Grant & Fund Accounting:
Ensure compliance with grant and funder requirements, tracking restricted and unrestricted funds appropriately.
Oversee grant reporting and expense allocations, ensuring proper documentation.
Collaborate with program staff to manage grant budgets and financial reporting deadlines.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit financial regulations.
Develop and enforce financial policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and accountability.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
Supervise accounting staff and provide guidance on financial best practices.
Work closely with department heads to provide financial insights for strategic decision-making.
Present financial reports and updates to the board of directors and finance committee.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
Minimum of 5-7 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit financial management.
Experience with grant accounting and reporting.
Skills & Competencies:
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud Financial Edge, NetSuite).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
