Job Summary:

The Director (Student Access & Resource Center) will provide vision and leadership for the Student Access and Resource Center (SAR Center) that serves a student population of over 40,000. Oversees all functions of the SAR Center, Alternative Testing Center, and Learning Access Center, in providing high-quality service, timely accommodations and access for students with disabilities. The Director will provide senior leadership and management of all the programming areas and facilities arranged by SAR Center and oversee long range fiscal planning and budget development.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Oversee the coordination of disability services and access for students utilizing a combination of innovation, current trends and data, research and best practices within higher education.

  • Facilitate the collection and experience in review of student disability documentation (i.e., medical, psychiatric and educational documentation) for current and/or prospective students.

  • Ensure students receive reasonable accommodations and oversee communication of accommodation needs via the Accessible Information Management (AIM) system to faculty and staff.

  • Demonstrate effective leadership. Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks.

  • Responsible for departmental assessment, data analysis, and reporting.

  • Responsible for executing divisional and departmental Priorities, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and University Effectiveness Plans (UEP) and collection of related data.

  • Responsible for maintenance of the AIM database.

  • Provide effective and ethical supervision, training and evaluation of a large team of full-time professional staff, part-time student staff and contract vendors.

  • Conduct regular staff meetings and individual supervision meetings. Serve as a positive role model and advocate for staff and students with disabilities.

  • Oversee departmental budgets, work closely with departmental accountant in the annual preparation of budgets, daily administration of budgetary resources, and forecasting needs/expenditures of the office.

  • Manage budgets in compliance with university rules and regulations.

  • Facilitate the effective and appropriate use of all departmental and University resources.

  • Act as an ADA and disability consultant for university faculty, staff and students.

  • Work with individual students, professors and academic advisors as needed regarding special needs of students and work to resolve all accommodation disputes.

  • Provide training for faculty/departments about students with disabilities and facilitate trainings for how to reduce barriers, promote access and incorporate universal design in the classroom.

  • Direct staff development and training in areas related to ADA best practices, accommodations, retention and academic support for students with disabilities.

  • Oversee all outreach to the campus and community at large.

  • Responsible hiring proposals, review and execution of all hiring documents, including onboarding of new staff. Act as the hiring manager for all professional positions.

  • Serve on University and Division of Student Affairs committees, and other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Master's Degree with five (5) years of experience in the field of disability services in higher education or equivalent education/experience.

  • Solid knowledge of the guidelines associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (Title II) and its applicability to a higher education setting.

  • Experience supervising professional staff.

  • Experience in managing a departmental budget or fiscal resources.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Doctorate Degree with seven (7) years of experience in the field of disability services in a higher education setting following the guidelines associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (Title II) and its applicability to a higher education setting.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (Title II) and its applicability to a higher education setting.

  • Knowledgeable in the assessment of academic skills in relation to various types of disabilities including but not limited to Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, psychiatric disorders, cognitive impairments, chronic illness, sensory impairments and mobility impairments.

  • Experience in managing a departmental budget and understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Amendments Act of 2008.
