Job Description:

Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a part-time opportunity for a Surgical Technologist in Orange, CA.

A Certified Surgical Technologist, intermediate level position responsible for preparing procedure rooms, sterilize equipment, assist physician during procedures such as tubal sterilization, vasectomy, or procedural abortion procedures. Understands the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the provider. Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care and constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.  Provides non-judgmental, empathetic patient care.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions: Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties, and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.

Surgical Technologist:


  • Adhere to agency’s policies, procedures, and protocols. This may include successfully completing agency, regional and/or state certification requirements.  Comply with infection control, safety, and emergency guidelines.

  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work efficiently and as a team in a high-pressure environment

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Anesthesia, will prepare and maintain the sterile environment, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available for the surgical team.

  • Responsible for anticipating and meeting the surgeon's needs while following strict infection control procedures and ensuring that instruments and surfaces are sterile.

  • Disinfect the operating room after the procedure to ensure safety for the next procedures. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for ensuring effective communication between the Surgical Technologist and the surgical team.

    • Effectively communicates with Licensed Provider any and all information regarding patient disclosure of violence, abuse, or unsafe living situations during patient interactions.

    • Perform and record basic lab work (Hgb, pregnancy test, urine dipstick, rapid HIV, etc.)

    • Obtain vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight, etc.).

    • Clean and sterilize equipment and stock exam rooms.



  • Operate, assemble, adjust, or monitor sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment to ensure proper operation.

  • Updates and keeps accurate records of the surgeon’s preferences.

    • Obtain patient medical history.






    • Stays up-to-date on surgical technology, medical terminology, and procedures.



Assist and support the clinical staff in the:


  • The provision of abortion services, such as but not limited to:

    • Performs a variety of tasks in the laboratory, including, but not limited to, assisting in analyzing products of conception up to 23.6 weeks.

    • Hand instruments and supplies to physicians and perform other tasks as directed by the physician during the procedure.

    • Preparing instruments and assist with laparoscopic procedures, vasectomy procedures, and or procedural abortion procedures.




  • Appropriately assembles/handles tray preparation and instruments and anticipates the need for instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring their timely availability.


  • Provide patient care by:

    • Pre-procedure: connecting to EKG, B/P, and pulse oximeter.

    • Post-procedure: transporting to recovery room, wiping and cleaning bodily fluids.



  • Comply with infection control, safety, and emergency guidelines.

  • Work to ensure patient satisfaction. Establish rapport with patient, remaining cognizant of and responsive to needs for medical and educational care delivered in a professional, expedient manner.

  • Ensuring timeout is conducted accordingly prior to the start of procedure.

  • Prepare center for opening and secure it closing, as required.

Non-Essential Functions:


  • Keep current on relevant anatomy and physiology, methods of contraception, STIs, pregnancy, adoption, early prenatal care, education techniques, community resources, agency protocols, referral procedures, and all Planned Parenthood programs.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Health Center Manager or designee. These may include occasionally needed specialized services such as services for developmentally disabled clients and specialized patient education programs.

Qualifications

Licensure and/or Certification Requirements


  • Surgical Technologist graduate from a surgical technology program accredited through AST, ACS, ARC-ST, or CAAHEP. Certified Surgical Technologist required and experience in clinical setting Reproductive, managed/primary health care and/or abortion services, and sterilization experience desirable.

 

Minimum Education:


  • High school diploma or General Educational Development “GED” required.

 

Minimum Work Experience:


  • 1 -2 years’ experience in clinical setting required.

  • Recent experience performing blood draws and injections desirable.

  • Reproductive, managed/primary health care and/or abortion services experience desirable.

 

Supervisory Experience:


  • Demonstrated ability as an effective leader, including coaching and team-building skills.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

  • Budgeting experience.

  • Excellent strategic planning skills.

  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work without direct supervision.

Language Requirements/Preferences:


  • Some positions require bilingual skills (reading, writing, and speaking). If required, candidate will be tested for proficiency prior to job offer.

  • This position requires travel to other sites and locations; if using a personal vehicle to meet this requirement, a valid CA driver’s license and current auto insurance in compliance with the minimum requirements of CA vehicle code are required.

  • Abortion patients are cared for at each of our health centers and in part through the administrative, support, and other non-clinical services provided at all PPOSBC locations and by all PPOSBC employees, and supporting these critical services is an essential job duty and fundamental responsibility of all employees.
