Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to join our interdisciplinary team at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in microbial genomics. This exciting opportunity will allow you to contribute to cutting-edge research in the Proctor Lab understanding microbial communities, their functions, and their roles in health, the environment, or other relevant areas. The successful candidate will work on a range of projects employing state-of-the-art genomic technologies, including high-throughput sequencing, metagenomics, and bioinformatics analysis.

A biomedical postdoc position provides an opportunity for early-career researchers to gain valuable experience, develop independent research skills, and contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in their field of expertise.

Position Key Accountabilities:


  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on microbial genomics, focusing on the collateral sensitivity of the mycobiome to commonly used medications and/or the population structure of select fungal genera within the human microbiome
  • Analyze large-scale genomic data using bioinformatics tools, and interpret results in the context of microbial ecology and evolution.
  • Design and execute experiments related to microbial genome sequencing, assembly, and functional annotation.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers in bioinformatics, microbiology, and systems biology.
  • Publish high-quality scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Mentor graduate students and research assistants.
  • Present research findings at conferences and meetings.

Minimum Education:


  • Doctoral/Terminal Degree in Microbial Genomics, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology or a related field.
  • S trong expertise in microbial genomics techniques, including next-generation sequencing (NGS) and metagenomics.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and software for genomic data analysis (e.g., R, Python, bash)
  • Proficiency with high performance computing
  • Experience with microbial culture and isolation techniques (preferred, but not mandatory).
  • A strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaborative teams.
