Job Summary
Review and approval of engineering documents, project coordination, technical support for real-time mission-critical Energy Control System, field equipment communicating with these systems, related applications, and appurtenant systems. Advise a team of Lead Engineers with project plan organization, system control applications, and other areas. Provide direction to other sections, departments, divisions, vendors, and consultants in coordinate with other engineering groups. Oversee and approve project work and assure that objectives are met.
Key Responsibilities
Proactively identify, anticipate and perform special projects/studies that innovatively solve unique and complex problems with broad impact to the business.
Develop alternate methods or procedural concepts to resolve unique problems.
Identify and improve engineering processes/services.
Develop new Company standards and procedures based upon new technologies or industry changes.
Instruct/mentor other engineers of all levels in regard to distribution, transmission, and sub-transmission system, grid and customer reliability, and the power industry in general.
Perform unique and highly complex engineering analyses and operational application of power grid equipment using standard engineering methodology and principles.
Develop/present design concepts, determine alternate options/methods and create action plans to resolve issues or to improve processes/services in the operation of the power delivery system.
Be able to work independently with minimal guidance.
Make presentations to corporate/regulatory/public entities regarding new operational concepts with transmission and distribution operation.
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for the ECC distribution, sub- transmission, and transmission system.
Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements.
Independently apply NERC standards, industry practices, engineering guidelines, corporate policies, and ECC procedures.
Participate in Industry associations.
Recommend and champion new ECC engineering processes, Avangrid ECC OPCO standardization, reliability standards, and operating procedures.
Presents complex ideas, anticipates potential objections and persuades others to adopt a different point of view.
Work with other ECC and Avangrid engineers to prepare, review, maintain, and interpret drawings.
Establish and properly apply design standards, industry practices, design criteria, guidelines, polices and operating procedures.
Recommend and champion solutions for non-standard situations.
Identify/specify new equipment and technology; create and assemble highly detailed documents; create process steps as needed for the successful execution of the action plan.
Lead and represent ECC on assigned project teams, task forces, and special studies.
Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and provide guidance to other team members.
Direct and review the engineering work of drafters, designers, department engineers, and outside engineering firms.
Direct, follow and adjust the processes, policies and standards related to the ECC distribution, sub- transmission, and transmission to meet the customer and stakeholder needs.
Promote cross functional teamwork on assigned tasks and projects.
Work collaboratively and independently to specify and operate systems to address specific/unique situations.
Promote and follow the Company safety policies and practices.
Accept responsibility for their safety and health as well as the safety and health of their fellow employees.
Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the power industry, through training and industry associations.
Participate in the management of department resource allocation including developing forecasts and plans to ensure adequate resources and skills are available.
Respond as needed to assist in storm restoration efforts.
Principal Engineer:
Utilize knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
Provide technical leadership in most complex projects that have a wide impact on the business
Mentor, develop and support team of three Lead Engineering in technical skills
SME for Energy Control Center Engineering
Liaison/ direct contractors on company policy, standards and best practices
Work independently with little supervision
Required Qualifications
Theoretical Engineering knowledge - Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytic, modeling & Calculation, understanding the business model; Global View of the Business (Values cross-functional collaboration, understands importance of growing knowledge and developing relationships and links across the organization)
Practical engineering experience/application - Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g. field experience, standardization "Perform economic analyses of engineering alternatives, develop business cases and defend in front of stakeholders.")
Engineering documentation - Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation
Ability to review and approve engineering work done by others to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements
Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment - Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and requirements
Functional/job/business specific Competencies:
Engineering documents, project coordination, technical support for real-time mission-critical Energy Control System, field equipment communicating with these systems, related applications, and appurtenant systems.
Technical Drawing, System Protection and Control, Real-time transmission and distribution system operations.
Education & Experience Required:
Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited university/college required and 10+ years of relevant experience required
