Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of the Optometry and Contact Lens Department and Ophthalmology appointed Medical Director, works independently using accepted optometric procedures to examine and care for patients requiring comprehensive eye examinations, contact lens care, emergency ward follow up care, glaucoma co-management, and same day service attention.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducts comprehensive eye examinations. Fits and prescribes contact lenses for patients and oversees that his/her patients receive appropriate instructions in wearing, handling, and care of lenses Assumes responsibility for patients requiring same day attention that are referred internally or from surrounding area hospitals.
4. Assumes responsibility for the follow up care of patients seen in the Emergency Ward.
5. Ensures that contact lenses are ordered and verified in a timely fashion for his/her patients seen in the service
6. Assumes responsibility for the daily care and overall maintenance and calibration of equipment
7. Monitors and conducts clinical research studies
8. Gives suggestions to modify and improve the functions of the given services such that they are run efficiently, effectively, and as pleasant as possible for the patients and staff who interact with the service
9. Assumes responsibility for the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of charge documents of his/her patients such as destination slips or physician encounter forms
10. Ensures that medical records are documented and maintained on his/her patients of the Service and that medical record procedures are followed and that records are available for patient care
11. Provides instruction to residents, fellows, or technicians in refraction, other exam procedures, and contact lens fitting
12. Handles complaints from his/her patients relating to delays in service, improperly fit lenses, and issues relating to poor communication. Refers cases of extreme dissatisfaction to the Director of the Service or to the Patient Care Representative
13. Works closely with the Medical Director to coordinate the activities of the Service and to foster all clinical services. Keeps abreast of a changing health care environment and is responsible for maintaining current licensure
14. Share responsibility for the inventory and security of equipment, drugs, and other supplies and oversee that general and medical supplies are ordered
15. Works with other ancillary and technical staff in performing all the above patient care, clerical, and support services that comprise the Optometry and Contact Lens Services
16. Performs other duties related to the smooth operation of the service as requested by the Director
17. Attends staff and other meetings when requested
18. Provides comprehensive eye exams using accepted optometric procedures to evaluate patients in the Refractive Surgery Service
19. Administers preoperative care and counseling as per the direction of the Medical Director
20. Provides postoperative evaluation as per the direction of the Medical Director
21. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care (or services) appropriate to the age and culture of the patients served in the department. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age and culture-specific needs.tion
Additional Job Details (if applicable)
Doctor of Optometry degree with Massachusetts License in Optometry, one year ACOE accredited residency training program (ocular disease or cornea and specialty contact lens training preferred), and fellowship or candidacy for fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry. In addition, proficiency in the fitting of hard contact lenses including corneal RGP and scleral lenses using spherical, bitoric, and bifocal designs, and soft contact lenses (daily and extended wear) in conventional, toric, and bifocal designs is required. Contact lens fitting experience should include the correction of refractive errors, aphakia, keratoconus, grafted and ocular trauma. Experience with scleral lens fits, pediatric fits, hard lens modifications, clinical research studies, data processing, pachymetry, corneal topography data and endothelial cell evaluation are desirable.
