Job Description:

Summer Intern – Stem Cell Biology and Cancer Biology

The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is a dynamic non-profit research organization using science to impact the world. Our research groups focus on human genomic medicine, infectious disease, plant, microbial and environmental genomics, synthetic biology and biological energy, bioinformatics, and software engineering. We are looking for self-motivated, inquisitive minds to learn with us in asking and finding the answers to questions that progress the field of genomics and human health.

The candidate will work in the laboratory and assist in projects assisting epigenetic regulation in normal hematopoiesis including hematopoietic stem cell function as well as in acute myeloid leukemia biology. The candidate will be responsible for learning basic molecular biology and stem cell biology techniques and applying these techniques to explore AML interaction with the immune system.

The candidate will learn:
Hematopoietic stem cell biology, biology of blood cancer specifically acute myeloid leukemia (AML), anti-AML immunity.

Skills the intern will acquire:


  • Basic molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning, cell culture

  • Basic stem cell biology techniques such as flow cytometry


Requirements:

  • Current high school student

  • Biology or computer science or relevant experience

  • Ability to work independently, while respecting the needs of a larger team

  • A commitment to scientific discovery

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Full-time attendance (40 hours per week)
