Job Summary
Collects specimens for laboratory analysis including blood and non-blood specimens. Explains safety protocols and procedures to patients, is customer focused and provides certain clerical functions.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Collect blood using good judgment, reasonable and prudent care and according to policies and procedures, including but not limited to the following:
-Check two patient identifiers and insure a complete match between orders, labels and patient verbal response before and after collection.
-Summon patient or greet patient according to local policy, custom and procedures. Once the patient has been called, ensure the safety of the patient. Avoid leaving the patient alone.
-Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
-Access patient in LIS system. Release order or accept as applicable.
-Use a time out to ensure all necessary tests have been released and/or labels printed. Match all labels and tests to containers.
-Select appropriate specimen collection equipment. Identify suitable needles and adapters as necessary.
-Select appropriate site for blood collection. Demonstrate understanding of vein and site prioritization to minimize risk of complications including but not limited to site avoidance or prohibitions due to mastectomy and lymph related lumpectomy history, venous access devices and ports, cannulas, dialysis shunts or prioritization required for infusion therapy.
-Tie tourniquet and prepare site for venipuncture
-Collect specimen according to order of draw
-Ensure a safe collection by adhering to all safety and other protocols such as needle stabilization during draw.
-Insure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or use of mechanical device.
-Label in presence of patient
-Package specimen and place for transport.
-If trained, batch specimens and file manifest.
-Monitor patient and ensure bleeding has stopped, and patient is stable.
-Give patient post draw instructions on wound care.
-Review prior to collection a standard checklist which includes checking for potential history of adverse reactions.
-Is customer focused and puts the needs of patients first.
-Demonstrates professionalism. Presents a positive image of the unit, division and institution.
-Maintain adequate workflow by consistently checking with front desk for patients in waiting queue. Demonstrate understanding of prioritization protocols.
-Maintain patient privacy and follows all HIPAA guidelines. Maintains privacy of other staff.
-With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions.
-With training, or if qualified by competency review, provide pediatric and services to ancillary phlebotomy operations and locations serviced by Laboratory Support Services Central Phlebotomy
-If trained, complete reception and EPIC registration and order release.
-Provide reception and associated clerical functions at Specimen Collection center front desk including Fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, greeter/receptionist and placing face sheets and/or requisitions in queue according to policies and procedures.
-Maintain adequate supply inventory, and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
-Satisfy annual required continuing education for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA and other required training.
-Work in collaboration with and practice good team working and communication skills with co-workers.
-Adhere to unit polices for dress code, and other areas of personal presentation such as, but not limited to fingernail policy and personal hygiene, and interpersonal communications.
-Adhere to unit polices for attendance, time off, scheduling, breaks, lunch etc.
-Collection may be on inpatient, outpatient or both
