The GIS team supports 50+ environmental planners, biologists, archaeologists, and a variety of other technical staff. They manage data collection tools and provide analysis and cartographic services for technical reports, including vegetation and sensitive resource mapping, analyses of project impacts, and development of resource management and mitigation plans.


This position will provide leadership to the Southern California GIS team, collaborating closely with the Northern California GIS team, and working in partnership with the Northern California GIS Manager and HELIX leadership on new technologies, GPS options, software and business pursuits. This position will manage internal projects to create efficiencies in the GIS process at HELIX through application, map and survey design.


This position requires design, layout and production of GIS datasets and cartographic output. The candidate should be a reliable, self-motivated individual with attention to detail and a positive attitude. This individual will need the ability to communicate effectively, demonstrating very strong communication and soft skills in supervising staff, partnering with team members, and collaborating across multiple disciplines and offices. They must be able to prioritize, multi-task and complete high-quality work within specified deadlines. Customer service is a priority in the GIS department. Having a solutions-oriented, collaborative, team mindset is a requirement.


The candidate must have professional expertise using Esri's ArcGIS Desktop 10.x software, including Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst. Typical duties include GIS data management, data conversion, map creation, and metadata generation and maintenance, for small to large projects. Must have the ability to incorporate, edit and manage various types of data into GIS. Relocation is not available for this position. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Pay will be based on qualifications and/or experience, with a robust benefits package. Expected starting salary range of $120,000 to $155,000.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements for the Southern California GIS Group Manager:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in geography or closely related field with a concentration in GIS
  • Minimum ten years of professional work experience in a GIS position; with progressive levels of responsibility, including a supervisory role
  • Expert knowledge of GIS software, tools, principals and standards using Esri's ArcPro, ArcGIS Desktop, 3D and Spatial Analyst
  • Proficiency in cartography and map design, including an understanding of coordinate systems.
  • Knowledge of GPS technology, field data collection techniques, and data integration to GIS using ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Survey123
  • Familiarity with the Southern California geographic environment and data sources, including environmental resources, impact analyses, and knowledge of biological, archaeological, paleontological, and habitat restoration data sources
  • Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.


Additional skills/accomplishments considered a plus:

  • Master's Degree in geography or closely related field
  • Professional GIS experience working in the environmental consulting industry
  • Drone pilot, or experience processing drone flight data, preferably using ArcGIS Drone2Map.
  • AutoCAD experience (preferably AutoCAD Map), including using it as a standalone software, and converting data to/from ArcMap.
  • Experience using the Adobe Suite, preferably Adobe InDesign.
