Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field. Three years of previous employee relations experience, human resources or experience in a related field. Certifications in human resources and mediation preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Performs complex administrative and supervisory work for employee engagement and relations and supports the development and execution of initiatives that foster a positive workplace culture and improve retention.
Advises and ensures compliance of supervisors and employees through the discipline and grievance processes, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies and procedures. Assists in developing, implementing, and managing employee engagement programs. Collaborates with various departments, both internal and external to People & Procurement Operations, to promote and support engagement activities and initiatives. Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to employee engagement and relations. Aids in tracking and reporting key engagement and retention metrics. Assists employees in resolving employee relations issues through explaining options and the grievance and complaint processes, policies, and procedures. Assists managers in addressing supervisory concerns and resolving employee relations issues with staff. Recommends and reviews disciplinary actions. Tracks and reports disciplinary actions and employee activity/data for human resources reporting as required. Provides guidance, interpretation of policy, and training to the university community to resolve disputes at the lowest administrative level. Recommends updates to human resources (HR) policies, procedures, and best practices for University employee relations. Conducts research and prepares special and ad hoc projects or reports. Prepares and gives presentations and trainings related to employee engagement and other HR functions, policies, procedures, and best practices. Provides administrative support for leadership development programs and professional development initiatives. Determines work priorities, evaluates work in progress, and ensures the meeting of deadlines. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requires working knowledge of workplace accommodations and leaves, including Federal and State employment laws as well as university policies and procedures. Must communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, applicants, and other university departments, vendors, and off-campus agencies on procedural and policy matters. Handles sensitive and confidential information, ensuring compliance with university and system policies and State and Federal legal requirements. Requires independent judgment, initiative, attention to detail and accuracy in all assignments, and strong analytical, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
Position requires the ability to: coach/advise employees and management through sensitive personnel issues with tact and skill to resolve conflict and seek workable solutions. Manages multiple projects while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Applies processes for influencing performance management. Investigates work-related or compliance issues and prepare summary reports, conclusions, and recommendations. Uses reason, de-escalation, and conflict resolution techniques to manage difficult or emotional situations. Presents facts and recommendations verbally and in writing. Uses computerized systems for word processing, spreadsheet applications, and databases to retrieve and analyze data and/or create reports. Coordinates activities with other internal departments and/or external agencies. Creates and provide presentations on various HR topics and related information.
Travel to other SHSU campuses and conferences may be required according to department needs.
Position will require Title IX training and mediation certification.
