The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University seeks exceptional candidates to join the department as Vice Chair for Well-Being and Support with an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor in the Clinician Educator Line.



  • The major criterion for appointment as Clinician Educators is excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, teaching, administrative and/or scholarship appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.


The role will be that of Vice Chair for Well-Being and Support for the Department. Your efforts will focus on improving elements of organizational culture, optimizing the practice environment, and ensuring that physician well-being is considered as part of all key organizational decisions. This position will report directly to the Department Chair.


In collaboration with the Department Chair and Director of Finance and Operations, specific responsibilities will include:



  • Creating collegiality and community between health care professionals and departmental staff

  • Advancing leadership behaviors among clinical and section leaders

  • Developing and promoting peer support and other support resources for those in distress

  • Developing and promoting coaching programs (e.g. Physician Partnership Program, BeWell, WellMD)

  • Developing and promoting communication training opportunities (e.g. Relationship-Centered Communication, Upstander Training, Brave Conversations)

  • Developing and promoting initiatives that promote a positive team climate within the interventional platform

  • Collaborating with DEI leaders to develop and promote initiatives that create a sense of belonging and inclusion

  • Working with clinical and quality leaders to advance the Quadruple Aim and Stanford Model of Professional Fulfillment
    TM through quality improvement projects aimed at optimizing efficiency of practice and support in the practice environment

  • Working with the WellMD center to evaluate the current state of professional well-being in the organization, benchmark it against other organizations, and monitor it longitudinally

  • Liaising with division chiefs and program directors to review well-being survey results and develop a strategic plan for well-being interventions

  • Project lead for Clinical Department Incentive Program (ICDP) Wellness Project

  • Working with departmental improvement leaders to consider physician wellness implications for the department's improvement projects

  • Developing departmental and unit-based metrics to evaluate professional well-being and support 

  • Developing an educational speaker series (e.g. Organizational Well-Being, Mental Health, Compassion and Self-Compassion Cultivation, Substance Use Disorders, Physician Suicide, Personal Resilience)

  • Representing the department at the Physician Wellness Forum 

  • Representing the department at the Well-Being Committee

  • Representing the department at the Departmental Well-Being Directors council

  • Maintain departmental website to present these efforts, opportunities, and contacts of well-being team members

  • Leading and supporting research and other scholarly activity aimed at understanding wellness and interventions that improve it in anesthesiology, pain, and perioperative medicine,

  • Mentoring, sponsoring and promoting faculty and trainees interested in wellness,

  • Presenting at faculty meetings and the governance committee on these areas of responsibility.


The successful candidate must have an MD or degree (or foreign equivalent) and be a board-certified (or equivalent) anesthesiologist who is eligible for a California license or exemption.

The expected base pay range for this position is:



  • Clinical Associate Professor: $441,000 - $465,000

  • Clinical Professor: $478,000 - $499,000


This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine's faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
