Job Summary
Assistant Nursing Director / 36 Hour Rotation Shift / Bed Management BWH


The RN Bed Flow Manager is responsible and accountable for the daily patient flow and bed utilization within BWH. The scope of responsibility includes, but is not limited to, the identification of daily patient bed needs, expedited placement of patients to appropriate beds, and management of capacity constraints to maximize bed use within the BWH organization. The RN Bed Flow Manager collaborates with Bed Control and makes informed clinical decisions related to patient placement.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Acts as primary clinical professional for bed control staff and is responsible for decision-making regarding safe patient placement, appropriate cohort and accurate patient precaution and infectious disease status.
2. Coordinates hospital to hospital transfers and outside facility ED to BWH transfers in collaboration with the Access Center.
3. Triages patients, in conjunction with ED physicians, who are eligible to be admitted to the MGB Community Hospitals.
4. Manages medicine bed assignments to ensure patients are placed in appropriate beds, physician treatment teams are level-loaded, and treatment teams are regionalized.
5. Implements organizational changes within bed control office as they relate to patient placement, unit expertise and ever-changing needs of the organization.
6. Establishes and sustains successful internal relationships with both nursing and physician leadership to facilitate bed flow and identify gaps in patient movement.
7. Collaborates with ICU Flow Manager to ensure timely placement of ICU call outs and OR cases.
8. Collaborates with Bed Control Supervisor to ensure completion of administrative tasks by bed control staff.
9. Communicates off-hours and weekend bed plans to bed control staff; communicates plans for capping as capacity allows; anticipating weekly needs
10. Interfaces with patient access services to provide through-put and bed utilization services to enhance the patient experience, while optimizing patient flow.
11 Patient flow representative to the ED and PACU, to provide smooth and efficient flow of patients, to decrease potential of increase waiting time in the ED, and to decrease potential holds or delays in the PACU.
12. Reviews bed availability frequently, assigns patients to appropriate beds based upon bed availability and triage information.
13. Uses information to make proactive patient placement decisions.
14. Completes daily administrative tasks related to capacity and bed needs and disperses information to appropriate stakeholders.
15. Attends daily safety huddle and all other meetings related to capacity. Reports out on capacity, bed needs, and identified barriers to patient flow.
16. Implements and operationalizes organizational needs and goals (i.e. regionalization, surge bed use)
17. Troubleshoots potential issues and collaborates with appropriate stakeholders
18. Additional administrative and clinical task as needed


HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:
1. Interviews and hires department nursing personnel considering hospital and nursing goals, departmental needs, clinical expertise, team temperament, and diversity
2. Assures that all employees are oriented to the Hospital, Department, and assigned Clinical Service and that appropriate documentation of competency is completed.
3. Assures timely completion of competency evaluation and performance appraisal.
4. Assures that staff maintains necessary licensure.
5. Insures completion of all employee status changes in a timely fashion.
6. Provides ongoing recognition of staff performance, including commendation of good performance and disciplining for poor performance.


DEVELOPMENT/STAFF:
1. Provides opportunities for staff development and facilitates attendance at in-service programs, clinical teaching, staff projects/assignments, improvement team participation, etc.
2. Facilitates opportunities for staff to become teachers, clinical leaders and committee members.
3. Promotes professional development of staff through mentoring, supporting attendance at educational offerings, and participation in Departmental, Hospital, Service line and external projects, programs, and initiatives.
4. Provides guidance to Assess Manager nurses in identifying developmental needs and strategies that foster effective problem solving, collaboration, consultation, sound judgment, and leadership.
5. Provides both formal and informal mechanisms to identify individual staff career goals and plans for achievement.


SELF:
1. Pursues a continuing program of self-development to remain cognizant of current trends and new methods within the health care environment.
2. Participates in Departmental, Hospital, and Professional committees and task forces.
3. Networks with other health care leaders within the organization and in the community.
4. In collaboration with Associate Chief Nurse, formulates individual career goals and plans for achievement.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Must exercise a high degree of professional judgment within the scope of licensure
2. Possess interpersonal skills to interact effectively with intra-inter and outside hospital physicians and personnel
3. Possess ability to manage critical issues relating to patient care and changing organizational climate


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for the supervision and scheduling of RN's and support personnel.



Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:


- Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing, BSN required. MSN preferred. Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Massachusetts.


- Experience: 5 years adult critical care and or emergency department experience required. Must have extensive knowledge of patient flow and outside hospital triage guidelines. Nurse leader experience required such as: flow coordinator, access nurse, bed control nurse.


- Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of the current literature.


- Must work well independently and have sound decision making skills.
