Position Summary

The candidate for the seasonal position will support day-to-day duties of the Sr. Land Coordinator at Gillmor Sanctuary April 15 through October 15, 2025. This is a 40 hour per week full-time seasonal position.

Gillmor Sanctuary is a large tract of saline wetlands and uplands located on the south shore of Great Salt Lake, owned and managed by Audubon Rockies, a regional office of the National Audubon Society. It hosts numerous birds and other wildlife known to inhabit fringing areas of Great Salt Lake. Join us in managing this unique landscape to support its native flora and fauna and learn about the birds and what they need to survive. The successful candidate will help implement management actions related to invasive weed control and mapping, surveys of flora, fauna, and water quality, have a keen interest in and knowledge of shorebirds, wading birds and other water birds, wetland habitat, wetland and grassland restoration, and conservation efforts to support native flora and fauna at the sanctuary.


The candidate will assist Sr. Land Coordinator in all aspects of land management activities relating to invasive weed management, wetland management, restoration projects, water infrastructure, vehicle and tool maintenance, and monitoring the sanctuary.

This role on-site and based out of the Audubon office, in Salt Lake City, UT.


Compensation:
$16.00 / hour
Essential Functions
  • Maintains and fosters culture of safety.

  • Assist in mapping extent of invasive plant outbreaks on the sanctuary.

  • Spot treatment of invasive vegetation with herbicide using sprayers, brushes, etc. (after certification).

  • Mow stands of phragmites using a brush-cutter.

  • Clear debris from canals and water control structures.

  • Assist with equipment and vehicle maintenance.

  • Excellent communications skills with Audubon staff and various contractors.

  • Assist with restoration project tasks such as seeding, seed collection, planting, vegetation removal, earth work, irrigation.

  • Assist with the sanctuary’s ongoing and/or new ecological research efforts (data collection and use of scientific instruments).

  • Assist in various avian monitoring efforts (water bird surveys, point counts, nest surveys, etc)

  • Help with data management, data entry, and quality control.

  • Assist with outreach events such as tabling, volunteer workdays, community science projects, etc.

  • Communicate and coordinate with volunteers during events at the sanctuary.


  • Qualifications and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

  • A Bachelor of Science in wildlife biology, conservation biology, environmental science, botany, natural resources, or 2 years of related experience is preferred.

  • Willingness to learn about and conduct land and/or wetland management tasks.

  • Willingness to learn about and perform herbicide application.

  • Familiarity with invasive weed species that threaten wetlands of Great Salt Lake.

  • Familiarity with identification of common birds found in the Salt Lake Valley.

  • Familiarity and experience with driving trucks on dirt roads, operating and maintaining heavy tools, operating an ATV / side by side.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without assistance.

  • Ability to work safely outdoors for most of the day in excessive heat.

  • Ability to work safely with heavy tools and other equipment around other people.

  • Tolerance of challenging working conditions (freezing temperatures, wet conditions, sun exposure, biting insects, mud, and water, etc.).

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to follow directions closely.

  • Ability to work outdoors independently and as part of a team.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft suite programs (Excel, Word, etc.).

  • GIS familiarity is a plus.
