Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Education is looking for an IT Supervisor to join us and lead a tight knit developer team. This position offers autonomy in your work and to lead others, and adaptable work that doesn't get boring! The team is looking for candidates with demonstrated leadership in an IT field, great teamwork, and initiative in problem solving. Office Location: This position is assigned to our office located at 84th & O St, Lincoln, NE.



Pay Grade 12, Step 1: $91,687.76/year ($92,834.59/year after pay structure increases on June 30, 2025)


This rate is based upon available budget funds; any offer will be made at this rate.

Essential Functions

• Oversees functional and technical system design, identification of system specifications, development of implementation plan, and ongoing support. Manages the software development lifecycle.


• Gathers input from stakeholders, plans development, delegates work, programs, review code, manages workload, and meets with developer and stakeholders.


• Develops and maintains software for multiple systems to be used across the Nebraska VR.


• Administers User Acceptance Testing (UAT), final refinements, production, and change management. Directs production of system development documentation.


• Conducts data analysis for logical views and data structure.


• Provides technical assistance and guidance related to application development issues.


• Troubleshoots software and database bugs and responds to helpdesk inquiries.


• Facilitates interconnections and data exchanges between systems.


• Attends training sessions and conferences to maintain current knowledge of latest trends, technologies, and best practices related to application development and management.


• Provides leadership in the hiring, supervision, and potential discipline of staff and contractors. Conducts performance management activities including establishing annual goals related to the strategic plan, holding check-in meetings to discuss goal progress, and completing performance appraisals. Facilitates a continuous learning environment by promoting professional development to ensure all employees have the opportunity and skills to be efficient and effective in meeting the goals of the agency. Delegates work and projects appropriately among staff.

Working Conditions and Travel:


This position requires approximately 95% of work time spent in an office environment (e.g., state offices, home offices); the remaining 5% is spent traveling or working in alternative sites such as meetings and trainings. There is also approximately five days of overnight travel per year.



Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, information systems, mathematics, engineering, or related field and two years of experience in a related information technology discipline (network infrastructure, coding, systems, or database). An additional one year of experience supervising activities of professional level IT staff. Any equivalent education and/or work experience may be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.



Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Ruby On Rails web framework, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, MySQL, and Version Control with Git. Experience with DevOps pipelines, testing processes, and engaging stakeholders.
