Job Description:

State Of Nebraska, DHHS, Division of Operations - ServeNebraska, is looking for the next Public Information Officer to join the team in Lincoln!


Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the Marketing/social media for ServeNebraska and its programs. This individual will be lead staff for the planning, implementation and wrap up of the Step Forward Awards Event for ServeNebraska.


The Public Information Officer will collaborate with Staff, and AmeriCorps National Service Programs to inform the public, governmental/program officials, and State employees of needs and issues and/or of the objectives, policies, and/or programs of ServeNebraska.



Examples of Work



Job Duties of the Public Information Officer include:




  • Responsible for the development of, and ongoing support of marketing communications.

  • Promote the agency and all of its products and services, ensuring the agencies goals and strategies are met.

  • Responsible for the agency's website, managing content to ensure, encourage and engage citizens in utilization of the website. Will keep information up to date by coordinating with Executive Director, and staff, by updating events, notices of funding opportunities, community meetings, program information and services offered by ServeNebraska.

  • Staff the Commissions Community Volunteering Committee to provide expertise, updates, marketing plans, data and annual report outs.

  • Communicate and coordinate with staff to publicize National Service programs, members and volunteers, be able to use social media and different modes of technology to tell the stories of impact created by AmeriCorps members and their service to communities in Nebraska.

  • Communicates and coordinates with staff to manage registration of events through the agency's webpage and outside vendors.




Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, graphic arts, digital media, videography, or related field and at least one year of experience in coordinating, planning, and managing public relations/publicity campaigns, mass media communication activities and/or public information programs. Required experience may substitute for the education on a year for year basis



Preferred Qualifications: Three to five year of experience working in marketing, public relations, communications, and advertising.



Other: This individual serves as a role model for work performance, ethical conduct and respect for others. Must be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner, while also interested in learning and growing with the organization to achieve success.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



Knowledge of: the principles and practices of visual reproduction such as photography, graphics, or printing; the English language including speaking, punctuation, sentence structure, word usage and grammar; the techniques, formats and styles of public information dissemination; agency operations, rules, policies and objectives; statewide and local media sources and operations including appropriate contact persons, publication/broadcast deadlines; the interrelationships of agency public information functions/activities and state/local program activities.


Ability to communicate orally and in writing in individual or group settings with news media representatives, governmental or program officials, agency staff and the public, at levels understandable to each audience; apply the principles and practices of public relations/journalism to operation of a public information function; operate audio and /or visual equipment such as recorders, cameras, and projectors; write/edit copy to fit assigned space in a layout; compare finished product with established standards and /or original to identify errors; evaluate the public information potential of written, illustrative, and related material for a specific project assignment; develop the information dissemination approach most likely to reach the target audience; assess the impact and effectiveness of the specific public information materials or activities in meeting the interests of the public or media and the needs of the agency; develop and apply agency policies and procedures for the public information function; assign and review the work of others; plan and organize the operations of a public information function. Individuals need to be quality focused, detailed with highly effective communication skills.
