DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The GBH Production Group is the oversight department for GBH television operations.  The Production Group is comprised of two divisions: The Studios, which manages the studio and EFP production and handles Fraser Studio scheduling & billing for Radio operations, GBH public spaces, and remote studio at Boston Public Library; and the GBH OutPost, which provides post-production services, and tape floor operations. 

JOB OVERVIEW

Studio Engineer will be proficient at one or more of the following skills:

Camera Operator:  This position may work in any or all of the following areas:

-In a studio, where the camera operator usually follows a camera script, which gives the order of shots called for by a Director. This may happen at rehearsal and during live or recorded productions. Unscripted work will include talk shows, musical performances, and event coverage. 

-A robotic camera operator works with digital HD cameras and produces pictures for directors by combining the use of complex technology with creative visual skills. Multiple joysticks operate cameras.

-On location (EFP), where the operator would set up the camera, lights, and audio and record events. The field camera operator is responsible for batteries, recording material, and audio equipment. 

Video Shader: The VS must know the basics of various video signal formats/frame rates, video processing, and the usage of waveform monitors. Having demonstrated the ability to manage the camera chain and monitoring in the control rooms, hue, saturation, luminance, contrast, color space, color temperature, white level, sync, and the understanding of these parameters directly related to iris, lighting, lens type, and focal length is also required. Responsibilities: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of High-Definition camera equipment. Proper setup, configuration, and diagnosis of various types of television camera systems, video monitors, and associated, equipment. Expert understanding in proper shading and coloring techniques to ensure proper on-air look while maintaining industry broadcast standards. Confers with directors and other crew members to discuss sequences, desired effects, camera movements and lighting requirements. Work closely with other members of the production team do deliver required visual results for productions.

Teleprompter Operator: The prompter op transcribes speeches or scripts into readable material to be displaced on a devices that that are used in front of a television camera.  The Teleprompter Operator needs to have good time management, organizational and communications skill. The prompter op needs to clearly communicate between the director, producers, technical crew, and talent. Knowledge of studio, field, and iPad prompters preferred.

Audio Engineer: The Audio Engineer takes care of all the necessary set-up and operation of sound recording equipment done in the field or studio.  They require good communication skills, agility, and the ability to put subjects at ease. The sound person when used in television works exclusively with a camera operator or other television technicians to make sure subjects have the correct microphones attached for optimal sound quality without interfering with camera shots. The sound engineer works closely with directors, producers, and talent. 

Capable of editing multi track productions. Ability to do single camera video recordings of musicians. Take the role of lead audio engineer for musical streaming events in conjunction with the TV studio production team.

• ATC-100 stereo monitor speakers


• 5 matched Dynaudio Air speakers and sub-woofer for surround mixing


• Genelec 1030A nearfield monitors


• TC Electronics M6000 with mastering and reverb


• Lexicon 300 reverb

Lighting Director: The LD designs lighting setups for television studios and field productions. They must create plans and budgets, determine what lights are needed, direct lighting cues and work with other members of the production team to carry out the vision of the director.  The LD should have deep knowledge and experience in Entertainment electrical systems, including 120/208volt three phase distribution and DMX control networking

Television luminaire selection, operation and troubleshooting. 

Overhead rigging techniques and support structures.

• MEWP scissor lift certification and experience working at heights of 26'.


• Ability to lift equipment weighing 40 lbs.


• Familiarity with an ETC (Electronic Theater Controls) Ion-XE lighting console and electrical regulations and entertainment industry standards.


• Ability to lead crew members in lighting, rigging, and scenic projects.


• Cooperative spirit interfacing with in-house and external clients.


• Teleprompting, woodworking, and scenic experience preferred.


• ETCP certification preferred.


• Massachusetts Crowd Manager certification preferred.

Grip: Part of the production team that takes direction from the Lighting Director.

Hangs and focuses a variety of lighting instruments. Builds and breaks down sets as well as wrap and unwrap them for transport to and from storage facility.

Knowledge of electricity, carpentry and camera operation preferred as well as aerial lift certification. The ability to lift 40 lbs.

• Video Switcher/Recordist:


• The video switcher creates the master output for real-time video broadcast or recordings. Experience with the Grass Valley suite of switching products.  Knowledge of signal flow for audio and video control KiPro, Clipstore, Airspeed record and playback functions.
