Job Description:


Job Title: Instructor of Engineering Technology



Campus Location: Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a "home" location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations)



Job Purpose: This is a nine-month tenure track position expected to teach Associate of Applied Science Engineering Technology classes and laboratories, create instructional materials and laboratory experiences, promote Engineering Technology degree programs through local, regional, and national engagement, and participate in program assessment activities related to accreditation, certification, and grant parameters. The successful candidate will also participate in recruitment and advising activities, along with other departmental services. This position's primary area of responsibility will be the Mechanical Technology discipline, with an emphasis in: mechanical power transmission, millwright principles, fluid power systems, industrial pumps and piping systems, and manual machine tool technology.


Documentation of skills related to Mechanical Technology must be provided in the candidate's application submission. Successful applicants will also be required to teach other coursework outside the Mechanical Technology discipline to maintain an adequate teaching load. These secondary disciplines include: 1) Computer-aided drafting and design using one or more of the following software programs; AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks and/or REVIT 2) CNC programming and machining 3) Industrial electricity, including PLC and robotics programming; 4) Operations management, including lean manufacturing, quality assurance, project scheduling, and safety.


The successful candidate must also document relevant teaching skills outside the Mechanical Technology discipline and be able to teach in all disciplines listed on their resume. Other tasks the successful applicant will be required to perform include curriculum development and evaluation, program development and evaluation, recruitment, student advising, transcript and work experience evaluation, advisory committee engagement, evaluation and preparation of articulation agreements and prior learning assessments. The successful candidate will also be required to perform minor repairs and periodic maintenance on equipment assigned to the Engineering Technology programs.



Essential Job Functions:



  • Provide instruction and training in various engineering technology disciplines. This includes conducting lab experiences within assigned courses. Instruction will cover the Mechanical Technology disciplines listed above, plus other areas the applicant has adequate work experience to cover. At least 50% of the responsible course load will fall under the Mechanical Technology discipline.

  • Develop new course materials and/or refine existing courses as required to ensure all courses are relevant to the needs as defined by industry representation.

  • Student recruiting and advising. Follow institutional and department procedures relative to enrollment development and retention for the Engineering Technology department. Be familiar with course offering schedules as outlined in the college catalog and through special initiatives, and conscientiously direct students in a manner that leads to successful student retention and graduation.

  • Share responsibility for day-to-day operation and routine upkeep of classrooms, labs, and equipment.

  • Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and processes relative to engineering technology.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.



Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or degree related to the discipline

  • Minimum of (3) years' experience in the Mechanical Technology disciplines listed.




Preferred Qualifications:



  • A MS degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Industrial Technology, with an area of emphasis involving mechanical engineering/maintenance or another graduate degree with a minimum of 18 documented semester hours in the field of mechanical technology/maintenance.


  • A minimum of (5) years' experience in the Mechanical Technology Disciplines listed.


  • Project scheduling and management using Microsoft Project.


  • Demonstrated experience using either AutoCAD or REVIT for residential and/or commercial design.


  • Experience in course delivery through hybrid and online technologies.


  • Willingness to take responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment supporting assigned coursework.


  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of Mechanical Technology, plus demonstrated experience in an additional discipline as described above.


  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies and embrace change.


  • Documented teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level or documented experience as a professional industrial trainer specifically in laboratory-based applications.


  • Demonstrated ability to work within a cross-disciplinary, team-based environment.

Leadership & Supervisory:



  • No authority or responsibility for the supervision of others.

Environment & Working Conditions: Occasionally exposed to extreme, environmental conditions and hazardous materials. Office environment is temperature controlled with occasional fluctuations. May be exposed to varying conditions when traveling to various work locations on other campuses.



Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):



  • Ability to perform minor repairs and periodic maintenance on equipment.

  • Ability to operate and manage machines in the department.

  • Travel to other campuses as needed to deliver course content.

  • Support evening and distance education offerings as needed to reach students.

  • The Engineering Technology program is based on the Morristown, TN campus. Most courses will be taught in Morristown, with the need to deliver content at the Claiborne County, Greeneville, or Sevierville campuses, or in a high school setting, should the opportunity arise. Experience in course delivery through hybrid and online technologies will be considered a plus. A willingness to deliver course content outside the traditional classroom lecture setting is a requirement.
