The Surgery - Oncology Research department has an exciting opportunity for a full time Data Scientist 2 position. The incumbent plays a critical role in advancing research and operational excellence by leveraging data-driven strategies to optimize scientific processes. This role requires a strong analytical mindset, combined with a deep understanding of biological principles, to design and implement models that enhance research efficiency, improve decision-making, and drive innovation. As a key contributor, the Data Scientist 2 is a dynamic figure that integrates complex data methodologies into research workflows, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, and ensures seamless alignment between data science initiatives and organizational objectives. This role also involves leading exploratory analyses, and providing strategic recommendations that influence stakeholders across research and operational domains. With a strong emphasis on cross-functional collaboration, the Data Scientist 2 actively engages with scientists, clinicians, and business leaders to translate data insights into actionable strategies, ultimately accelerating discovery and optimizing research impact. Additionally, this role provides opportunities for leadership growth and is suited for an individual ready to embrace significant responsibilities and drive meaningful impact within our Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute and the broader enterprise at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.



CORE JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Conduct independent research leveraging multiomics to address critical questions in onco-immunology, ensuring integration with team-driven research initiatives


  • Leads the development of computational pipelines and workflows, guiding team members in integrating publicly available datasets with in-house data infrastructure, to enable seamless data harmonization and exploration.


  • Performs active project management to design, optimize, and oversee analytical workflows to ensure rigor, reproducibility, and scalability in preclinical and translational research.


  • Leads the assessment of effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.


  • Tracks project milestones and ensures timely execution through proactive team coordination, comprehensive progress reporting, and alignment with institutional research priorities.


  • Leads cross-functional teams to implement the usage of computational models, monitor outcomes, and refine methodologies based on data-driven insights.


  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions



In addition to the core job functions:


Conceptualize and design experimental workflows that drive data generation, and oversee execution to ensure rigor and reproducibility in preclinical research Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings to provide mentorship, feedback, and project direction to other team members Manage and coordinate the clinical specimen biobank and tissue archives to ensure optimal use of clinical resources in translational research. Oversee the inventory tracking, quality control, and structured organization of biopsy samples, ensuring comprehensive documentation, compliance, and data integrity. Prepare and present research findings in high-quality manuscripts and progress reports Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including clinicians, data scientists, and basic scientists, to foster cross-functional research efforts. Represent the laboratory in institutional meetings and external conferences.



Department Specific Qualifications



  • Doctoral degree in relevant field ( Cancer Biology, Cancer Genomics)


  • 3+ years of post-doctoral or equivalent experience
