Purpose of Position:



The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized educational programs to students with special needs in the least restrictive environment. This position supports the instructional process by delivering lessons, developing individualized education programs (IEPs), and helping students succeed academically, socially, and in daily living skills. The Special Education Teacher collaborates with other educators, school personnel, and parents to ensure a high-quality educational experience for students.

Essential Functions:



  • Adapt Instruction: Modify classroom materials and activities to meet the needs of individual students and ensure IEP goals are addressed.

  • Administer Assessments: Conduct assessments (e.g., developmental, academic) to assess student competencies and inform IEP development.

  • Track Student Progress: Assess students' progress in various areas (e.g., academics, behavior, motor skills, communication) and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.

  • Collaborate: Work closely with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support individual educational plans.

  • Counsel Students: Offer counseling to students to improve performance, health, problem-solving skills, and address personal challenges.

  • Behavior Management: Design and implement behavior management plans (e.g., positive behavior support, applied behavior analysis) based on student needs.

  • Curriculum Implementation: Deliver instruction aligned with state standards and individual educational goals.

  • Compliance with Regulations: Ensure that all activities and procedures are in compliance with state and federal special education laws and regulations.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely records, including grades, attendance, progress reports, and IEP documentation.

  • Collaboration with Teachers: Provide collaborative support to general education and career and technical education teachers to adapt curriculum and materials for special education students.

  • Parent Communication: Advise parents/guardians on student progress, classroom goals, and strategies for reinforcing learning at home.

  • Supervision: Direct and guide assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to provide effective support in the classroom.

  • Student Behavior: Manage student behavior to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

  • Supervision Across Environments: Monitor students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to maintain a safe learning environment.

  • Meeting Participation: Attend meetings as required to share and gather information essential for student success.

  • Report Incidents: Report any incidents, such as fights or suspected child abuse, in line with school policies.

  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency situations promptly to address safety concerns.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:



  • Skills:

    • Perform complex tasks, including assessments and classroom management.
    • Operate office equipment and software applications to maintain records and reports.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate records in accordance with state and federal regulations.

  • Knowledge:

    • Understand relevant codes, policies, and laws regarding special education.
    • Knowledge of child development and behavioral management strategies.
    • Familiarity with lesson planning and curriculum modification.
    • Knowledge of assessment tools and instructional methods for students with disabilities.

  • Abilities:

    • Schedule and organize activities, meetings, and events.
    • Gather and analyze data to support decision-making.
    • Work effectively with a diverse group of individuals and in various work situations.
    • Problem solve and create action plans based on data and student needs.
    • Maintain confidentiality, adapt to changing priorities, and work flexible hours as required.

Qualifications:



  • Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred).
    • Valid state teaching certification in Special Education.

  • Experience:

    • Prior experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Proficiency with educational technology and software.

Working Conditions:


  • Work is performed in a classroom environment with frequent interactions with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for meetings or school-related events.
  • Physical requirements may include assisting students with mobility, carrying materials, or supervising activities.
