General Summary

The start date for this position is July 28, 2025. The successful candidate will be expected to arrive on campus and move into their assigned hall July 25 - 27, 2025. Candidates should be currently admitted to a graduate program at Eastern Michigan University.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Housing, the Housing & Residence Life Graduate Assistant for Marketing will assist with the development, implementation, and integration of communication and marketing strategies for Housing and Residence Life and work in concert with the Dining Services marketing. The Graduate Assistant for Marketing will oversee the Marketing Office and supervise 2 Graphic Designers. The Graduate Assistant of Marketing will assist in the on-call duty rotation, other departmental duties, and annual programs which may include, but are not limited to, training, recruitment & selection, and other departmental initiatives and committees

With the guidance of one or more staff or faculty members, perform a mixture of services in support of communication, technology, business operations, or student affairs activities as more than 50% of their service.

The Staff Graduate Assistant receives a stipend and tuition waiver subject to federal tax.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise 1-2 Graphic Designers.
  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly individual meetings with Student Staff members to develop and review goals/outcomes achieved, discuss issues, recognize contributions, and provide and solicit feedback.
  • Attend all departmental and building training sessions and workshops, as required. This includes presenting to the professional, graduate, and Student Staff as a whole.
  • Work with the Assistant Director for Housing to create and implement ongoing training/development according to staff needs.
  • Assist with the coordination of new and returning Student Staff selection (for both mid-year and fall hires).
  • Conduct formal evaluation of Student Staff members at the end of each semester.

Marketing/Communications

  • Create and maintain partnerships with external vendors and on-campus departments.
  • Oversee the creation of Housing and Residence Life promotional and marketing materials.
  • Maintain all Housing and Residence Life social media sites.
  • Represent the department as needed at SOAR, Explore Eastern, and other scheduled events.
  • Organize and conduct tours of Housing & Residence Life showrooms.

Administration

  • Work (20) hours per week, including (15) office hours per week. Office Hours will be determined by you and the Assistant Director for Housing.
  • During office hours, you may schedule meetings with students. Missed office hours must be made up. Make up office hours should be scheduled with the Assistant Director for Housing upon your return to work.
  • Prepare end of year and transition reports at the end of Winter Semester.
  • Maintain an active presence in the community through formal and informal interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the department.

Maintenance and Operations

  • Report ongoing facility and safety/security needs.
  • Work cooperatively with Physical Plant staff to identify and coordinate staff response to maintenance concerns.
  • Keep control at all times over all University issued items, such as keys and staff IDs.

Departmental Involvement

  • Participate in departmental committees and meetings.
  • Attend and participate in all departmental, graduate, and Student Staff training.
  • Assist with professional staff selection as requested by the department.
  • Collaborate with other departmental and university offices such as EMUPD, Wellness Center, Student Life, Diversity and Community Involvement, Physical Plant, Gilbane, and Athletics.
  • Represent the department at various functions such as Division of Student Affairs training and events, Opening and Closing Banquets, Student Staff In- Service training, RHA and NRHH events, and other events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree and prior experience in marketing, graphic design, and social media are required.

Applicant must be a full-time, degree-admitted graduate student at Eastern Michigan University.

The successful candidate must be available for the position for the full academic year.

Additional Requirements                                                                            

This position is a part-time position. It is important to recognize that the demands of a live-in position are different from other jobs. The position requires an average of (20) hours per week, although an individual week may require more or less time. GAs are not scheduled to work during periods when the residential facilities are closed for breaks and holidays.

GAs are often considered essential employees of the university and may be required to work to provide essential services for students when other staff cannot. This may include official university closings due to extreme weather or when other professional staff members may not be able to be on campus.

Due to the nature of the work (evening commitments, duty (live-in positions), and schedules that fluctuate from week to week, no more than (15) hours of commitments (internships, outside employment) are permitted. Outside work, including internships for credit, must be approved by the supervisor, before accepting employment or internships. Internships/employment cannot interfere with availability for duty.

Staff members may have to perform the following actions when fulfilling the requirements of their position:

  • Telephone communication
  • Actively completing duty rounds and health and safety checks in and around the complex ( including inclement weather) Conduct face-to-face interactions with residents ( Resident Connections, programming, facilitating mediations).
  • In emergencies, cleaning of bodily fluids, specifically vomit.
  • Traveling distances up to 2 miles to complete position responsibilities Responding to emergencies at various hours of the day and night Visually identifying individuals
  • Reading EID to confirm identity Traversing stairs Carrying/lifting to 25 lbs.
  • Utilizing computer software to issue packages, create logs, assist in identifying residents Completing documentation associated with lockouts and EID issuing

Preferred Qualifications:

Majors associated with the position are preferred. 

Special Instructions:

STIPEND & BENEFITS
Stipend includes a tuition waiver for nine credit hours for both the fall and winter semesters, and an $8,000 academic year stipend.

A furnished apartment or suite, meal plan during the term of employment. Summer employment & housing may also be available.
