POSITION SUMMARY : Assess, treat and care as prescribed for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for respiratory therapies, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check and operate equipment.

  • All duties and responsibilities shall be performed as set forth in our established policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to and assures compliance with Code of Conduct, Resident Rights, facility policies and procedures and all applicable rules, regulations and standards as set by Federal, State and regulating bodies.

  • Interpret, organize and implement physician, nurse practitioner, or licensed medical professional orders directing resident care.

  • Assist and continually monitor residents for proper position of airways, oxygenation, and respiratory stability.

  • Successfully collaborate and initiate coordination of respiratory services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the resident's total regimen of care.

  • Participate and cooperate with all aspects of facility needs and initiatives.

  • Perform necessary duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, and any other necessary documents as required or requested.

  • Initiate and be clinically responsible for the administration of respiratory therapies as prescribes to include but no limited to:

    • Ventilator management, assessment, cleaning, weaning and maintenance

    • Tracheostomy maintenance, cleaning, replacement, and assurance of airway.

    • Tracheal, NT, OT suction.

    • Accurately obtain, document and report all pertinent vital signs

    • Review and revise patient respiratory care plans as necessary

    • Fully assess and document complete respiratory assessment upon admit and on a continual basis, while on shift.

    • BiPap/CPAP management, assessment, weaning and maintenance.

    • SVN, LVN, MDI, and continuous cool/heated aerosol administration.




  • Inform Respiratory Director of any new admissions, discharges, and change of condition of any resident on skilled respiratory therapy services, and report any change of condition to appropriate nursing staff, and IDT team and physicians as clinically appropriate.

  • Complete, review, and ensure all respiratory therapy notes and charting are informative and descriptive of the respiratory care services being provided and that response to care is documented.

  • Ensure that any resident unable to call for assistance is checked frequently.

  • Follow all facility infection control precautions and safety regulations including, but not limited to, personal protective equipment, dress code, and any other infection control precautions.


  • Report to director any medication, medical supply, equipment needs necessary to perform your job functions.

  • Immediately report any unsafe, malfunctioning or questionable equipment in use by the department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Must possess a current Respiratory Therapist license issued by the state.

Other Specific Requirements


  • Must provide evidence of being free of tuberculosis infection upon hire and as set forth by the policies of the facility.

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decision when circumstances warrant such action.

  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.

  • Follows written and oral instructions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  • Works in resident areas, office areas and throughout the facility.

  • Moves intermittently during working hours.

  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.

  • Works beyond normal working hours on weekends and holidays, when necessary.

  • Subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).

  • Subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors and is exposed to dust, disinfectants, hazardous chemicals, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.

  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, visitors, or others.

  • Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and conditions, including Tuberculosis and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
