Professional Math Tutor Academic Support

Part-time Support Staff

Reporting to the Learning Resource Center Manager, math tutors provide academic assistance as a supplement to course instruction and serve as models for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs of successful learners. Assistance may include clarifying concepts, reviewing class materials, discussing problems, reviewing test questions, and working on solutions to learning barriers.


This position requires a professional with excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively use technology to enhance tutoring sessions.


We're currently seeking applicants who can tutor most, if not all, of the following math courses offered at Waubonsee, as well as math courses lower than these:


MTH104: Business Math
MTH107: Basic Statistics
MTH130: Precalculus II (Trigonometry)
MTH131: Calculus with Analytic Geometry 1
MTH132: Calculus with Analytic Geometry 2
MTH210: Finite Math
MTH211: Calculus for Business and Social Science
MTH233: Calculus for Analytic Geometry 3
MTH236: Introduction to Linear Algebra
MTH240: Differential Equations

Applicants who can tutor additional subjects/courses, such as Accounting, Computer Aided Design/Drafting (CAD), Computer Information Systems (CIS), Economics, Engineering, or Physics, are highly desired. Descriptions on classes related to those fields are also available on the Waubonsee website.


Successful tutors employ a holistic approach to student success, bring passion and enthusiasm to the Tutoring Centers, and are collaborative with students, faculty, and colleagues. They work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, gender identities, language groups, and abilities.



Responsibilities



Provide tutor assistance in appropriate courses in one-on-one and small group settings.


Provide drop/walk-in, classroom, and/or appointment-based tutoring services either in-person or virtually in a fair and equitable manner.


Maintain scheduled working hours at both virtual campuses and through virtual appointments based on semesterly scheduling.


Maintain records and data of tutoring sessions, programming information, and other aspects of the Tutoring Center in accordance with Tutoring Center policies and needs.


Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty.


Assist or take the lead in the creation, development, and implementation of programming events, such as workshops, presentations, and seminars on specific subject topics as well as general learning strategies.


Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters.


Complete and submit all required forms (e.g., time sheets, evaluations, questionnaires distributed at workshops).


Adhere to all Tutoring Center policies, procedures, and processes as detailed both in the Tutoring Center Handbook and by the Learning Resource Center Manager.


Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications



Master's or Doctoral degree in relevant field


Experience with tutoring or teaching high school or college students preferred.


Experience working with historically underserved student populations.


Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate effectively with others.


Experience and competency with technologies including Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook, Google Drive, and Learning Management Systems such as Canvas.
