We are seeking a full-time Senior Engineering Technician in our Cary, NC location who is passionate about boats, boating and marine electronics. In this role, you will operate and train others to operate a lake-based boat (30 feet or under) in support of testing and demonstration activities. This testing will cover much of the Garmin marine electronic ecosystem, as well as some Outdoor products targeted for divers or mariners. You will also modify and maintain the Garmin boat to support such testing as well as assemble and use a lab-based test boat rig for testing when off the water.
Essential Functions
Boat Operations
Operate boat in support of testing and demonstration activities
Train and certify others to operate boat, including providing inputs on best practice processes and procedures
Ensure the safe and efficient operation of small boats
While working in the field in support of engineering, sales and marketing teams, monitor the working environment and actions of all crew members, including acting as necessary to ensure their safety and to protect field equipment
Perform on the water testing/verification of field or other issues, providing documentation as needed
Install, configure, and customize the boat and its systems
Perform or supervise regular inspection and maintenance tasks on equipment in the field and recommend equipment purchases and upgrades as needed
Install, operate and troubleshoot electronics spanning the Garmin marine product line and specific Outdoor lake-based products
Maintain required records and logs as dictated by Garmin procedures
Operations
Maintain marine electronics in a lab environment to mimic a test boat
Complete ad hoc tests of new products and software features and verify or reproduce reported defects
Work with project teams on approaches to verify or improve the quality of Garmin hardware and software solutions
Execute manual and automated tests of Garmin software in accordance with established testing protocols to ensure quality and compliance with stated requirements
Verify issues reported to quality team for validity and reproducibility
Document and communicate test results in defect management system
Work closely with software engineers to assist in problem resolution
Verify software fixes in new software versions
Leverage understanding of system wiring and create wiring diagrams for harness fabrication
General
Prioritize work with input from management and work independently to accomplish tasks
Ensure all work areas including boats and vehicles meet or exceed Garmin standards for cleanliness and safety
Understand all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and ensure they are followed
Understand all applicable Garmin procedures and ensure they are followed
Associates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilities
Identify and resolve defects of advanced scope using proper engineering tools and techniques and independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
Write technical reports, including documentation of the test setup, block diagrams, and test setup schematics to fully document test results and analysis
Basic Qualifications
Associate's Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or related electronics/technical field AND a minimum of 4 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Demonstrated understanding of advanced level schematic designs and design of test circuits
Demonstrated expert proficiency using lab equipment and tools including ability to efficiently create test setups and advanced level designs
Demonstrated understanding of electrical engineering/software system interactions and can differentiate between hardware and software problems
Demonstrated full use of design standards and procedures and advanced knowledge of product test plans and procedures
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Driven problem solver with proven success in solving difficult problems while demonstrating a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
Must be team-oriented, positive, and possess excellent time management and follow-up skills while performing job functions independently with minimal direction and with a balanced focus on quality and quantity
Must possess the ability to bend, twist and lift up to 75 pounds while using safe lifting techniques, and pushing/pulling test equipment racks of up to 200 pounds, standing for an entire shift, climbing and utilizing ladders to connect cables and walking long distances throughout the facility
Desired Qualifications
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Previous experience executing test cases and reporting results to a defect tracking system
Previous experience using or testing marine electronics
Ability to work proactively and effectively with minimal supervision
Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a flexible, fast-paced and challenging environment
Ability to plan, install, configure, and test new marine systems such as kicker motors, gauges, throttle and steering systems, fuel systems, etc.
